Nightline Profiles Aaron Sorkin

I've said in the past that the White House should hire Aaron Sorkin as--if nothing else--a speech writer for President Barack Obama.  Obama needs a "President Andrew Shepherd" or "President Jed Bartlett" moment now more than ever. ABC's Nightline ran a profile of Sorkin on the eve of his Facebook movie, The Social Network's release.  In it, I'm more convinced than ever that Democrats should tap this man's brain.  His comments on Sarah Palin, and the rest of the GOP clown car are spot on.

  1. "Obama needs a "President Andrew Shepherd" or "President Jed Bartlett" moment now more than ever."

Everyone is wondering what crisis can be created that would be BIG enough to get people to rally 'round. Obama's been begging for a terrorist act lately. But hiring a guy to play stereotype 'domestic terrorist' would help him target his political enemies.

Creating a crisis can backfire if there's time to track it back. So there's risk to doing it. But there's risk in doing nothing.

    Time will tell.

  2. I would obviously hope that Obama's big Sorkin moment* does not come as a result of a major crisis or terrorist event. In fact, I think with politics as it currently stands, anything like that would send the country over the deep right cliff.

The neo-cons were surely hoping for a cataclysmic event, and they got one. I don't go as far as the "truthers" and posit that the Bush Administration engineered September 11. But I can sure see how that conclusion could be drawn. For all of the Alinsky slurs (never waste a crisis) directed at Dems, the Republicans sure made hay after 9/11, didn't they?

*My Sorkin moment idea is more along the lines of his work. The White House and president are down in the dumps in the polls, the politicos try to play politics, and then someone just "lets Obama be Obama." Big speech followed by big action, and a relentless, on-message follow-through. That's what I want to see.
