Lost Weekend

Sorry for the lack of new posts. Alcohol + pool party + lots of Las Vegas sunshine = in bed by 8:15pm! On the bright side, I got lots of sleep, and am energized for the week. But alas, there were no new posts for the week. I'll be sure to get something up later today. In the meantime, happy Monday!

Unplanned Vacation Day

Don't bother me. I'm on vacation.
Ah, the economy. We like to have an "attitude of gratitude" about having a job. But the waning benefits of regular employment can be a strain. I, for instance, have found Columbus Day to be a new work holiday. Unpaid. I don't blame my bosses. It's a way to save money, and keeping me employed and the business functional is the primary thing. And really, an extra day in the weekend can be its own reward. But I'm not sure it's going to lead to extra blogging. I'll let you know. . .

Monday Update: Yeah, I've Got Nothin'

Meanwhile, enjoy the funny kitty in the ugly people shoes.
Yeah, my Sunday night just turned up a pretty big blank. I'll be back later today, hopefully with something worth reading. In the meantime, take a look around. Help yourself to something from the archives. Back later!

Blast from the Past: Same Name, Pop Music Edition

There's a new show on CBS with a simple premise and simpler name: Same Name. I have no idea of the quality of the show, but basically, it has a famous person and a non-famous person with the same name (like David Hasselhoff or Kathy Griffin), and has them learn about each other's lives. I haven't sampled the show. But the title inspired this week's Blast from the Past.

As with movie titles, and television shows, many songs share a title or have very similar titles with other songs. Sometimes, both are hits, and even sometimes, both songs chart at nearly the same time. Back in the 80s, I remember noting that "I Can't Wait" was the title of two hit songs out at practically the same time, once by Nu Shooz, and once by Stevie Nicks, both in early 1986.

Also in the 80s, Van Halen had a hit with"Jump" and the Pointer Sisters had the very different "Jump (For My Love)." Both were hits early in 1984.

Prince and Sheena Easton teamed up for a song called "U Got the Look," in 1987. A little more than a year later, Roxette released simply "The Look." The songs are different, but largely on the same topic, with Roxette's lyrics saying "she's got" rather than Prince's "U got."

But I think the all time champ for songs with the same name at practically the same time would have to go to the cheesy 90s group Wilson Phillips and the slightly better En Vogue, who both released hit songs called "Hold On" within a day of each other in February 1990.

I'm sure there are other examples, and of course there are TONS that happened many more years apart. But that's it for this week's installment. Happy Monday, everyone!

Science is Cool: Hundreds of "Earth Like" Planets Found

I've found it very difficult to get back into the blogging swing after a lazy weekend. Politics just isn't doing it for me today.  So, how about a little sciencey stuff to get our week going? It's not polarizing, it's not controversial. . .unless you start to wonder about any religious implications should one of those planets have life on it.  Don't worry though, I'm sure our current religions would adapt to it, or a whole new one would spring up, right?

[Excerpt]

Hundreds of Possible Alien Planets Discovered By NASA Spacecraft

NASA's Kepler spacecraft hunting for Earth-like planets around other stars has found 706 candidates for potential alien worlds while gazing at more than 156,000 stars packed into a single patch of the sky.

If all 706 of these objects pass the stringent follow-up tests to determine if they are actually planets, and not false alarms, they could nearly triple the current number of known extrasolar planets. They were announced as part of a huge release of data from the mission's first 43 days by NASA's Kepler science team this week. . .

Happy Monday, everybody! I couldn't find anything out on the interwebs that was particularly newsworthy (at least that I found interesting), so here's something fun instead. Careful, keep track of time, 'cause it's pretty funny stuff. I hope to be back later today, if I can dig up some good stuff.

Top 10 Conservative Idiots Takes a Break

If you're wondering why I haven't posted a link lately to Democratic Underground's Top 10 Conservative Idiots (one of my favorite columns), it's because it's now officially on hiatus. They promise to be back (and I can't wait), so I'll be posting whatever they have whenever they have it. In the meantime, here is the update:

Friends,

Last week I noted that a combination of factors, which include important upgrades to DU over the coming weeks and months, as well as some very time-consuming stuff going on in my personal life (nothing bad - just time-consuming), were likely to prevent me from writing the Top 10 for a while. I'm sorry to announce that the hiatus starts now.

I want to thank everyone who expressed well-wishes to my son last week (he's doing much better now) and to everyone who basically told me to STFU with the apologizing and take care of my family. I really appreciate it.

I can't say for sure when the Top 10 will be back, but I will say that you haven't heard the last of me. And by the way, when I do get back, I would prefer not to have to write about the teabagging antics of Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) *gag* so do me a favor and please get out the vote for Martha Coakley this Tuesday.See you, I hope, sooner rather than later,-- EarlG

Welcome Back! Now What?

It's the first day back to work in the new year/decade, if you're like me. And it's the first day back on the blog in a way. I've been taking it very easy, posting just a couple of things a day. So, now what? The news hasn't spiked. Even yesterday's political shows were almost entirely rehashes of what they'd discussed the week before.

So, where do I go when I want to put something up to start the week, and there isn't much new to say? How 'bout a favorite topic like the dishonesty of FOX "News"? After all, they're still plugging away telling lies--it seems to be a perpetual thing. And while most of us who believe this to be true aren't going to change our minds, it is possible that a reader or two on the fence--hey, optimistically, maybe even a FOX fan can be converted over to our side. Here's hoping. And Happy New Year!

Fox closes out decade by pushing debunked falsehoods

Fox News and its website The Fox Nation closed out 2009 by advancing debunked attacks on President Obama. Specifically, Fox News hosted Ann Coulter, who repeatedly made the false claim that Obama attended "madrassas" as a child, while The Fox Nation continued to promote Andrew Breitbart's story that "ACORN CEO Visited Obama White House Week Before Scandal Broke" days after it was reported that the "Bertha Lewis" who visited the White House was not, in fact, the Bertha Lewis who is the CEO of ACORN. . .

Featured Site: This is Photobomb

Happy Monday, everybody. I don't know about you, but I had a freakin' busy weekend. Not on the blog, but on personal projects, such as making our yearly Christmas card, and a family photo DVD/CD project for the fam. Ugh. Pooped. And no clue where to look for some bloggy goodness.

Until, by chance, I found this site. The "photo bomb" is a relatively recent, and difficult to explain meme. Basically, it is any photo with something more interesting going on in the background than in the foreground. Sometimes it is deliberate, with a jokester making a weird face. Sometimes it is accidental, with an animal or some random event going on behind the photo's main subjects. But it is almost always funny. And that is what I need right now, some funny. You?

Happy Monday Back at Work!

Yeah, the big 4-day food-fest weekend is over. Back on the diets! Back to work! And back to blogging for me. Unfortch, I haven't been able to find much that interests me. So why not something funny? Something we can imagine happening to us. It's funny 'cause it isn't me!

Top 10 Conservative Idiots, November 2, 2009

Monday again, and it's already November, can you believe it? Well, of course you can, because it is now dark at friggin' five o'clock! Undoubtedly the worst part of fall/winter for me is the onset of early nightfall. I wonder if all of the post-holiday blues people feel in January is more due to the fact that it's nighttime most of the non-working day.

So, we've got to keep ourselves occupied. And one of my favorite ways to do that at the start of the work week is to read Democratic Underground's Top 10 Conservative Idiots*. Sure, it's bi-weekly now instead of an every Monday thing. But that just gives me something to look forward to. So go ahead and take a peek. You won't be sorry!

Featured Blog: There, I Fixed It!

I like to have something interesting up, most Monday mornings. But I'm usually doing it on Sunday night, and I just don't have it in me to do a whole lot of political dirt digging tonight. I mean, I did watch a couple of the political shows Sunday morning, but didn't find much to comment on. I mean, yeah, Liz Cheney is now a commentator for FOX "News" Sunday, which is. . .meh. It's a match made in. . .well. . .wherever.

So, I thought today I'd just share a funny blog with you all. A little laughter is a good thing on a Monday morning, right? So check out. . .

Glenn Beck Gets Keys to City. . .Change the Locks!

Image from source, Raw Story

So, it is appoaching the wee hours of Monday morning, and I always like to have something fresh posted for the week. Sometimes, on a Sunday evening that is easier said than done. Then I stumbled upon a headline that made me laugh (paraphrased above). So until later folks, enjoy the story and have a great Monday.

Glenn Beck gets key to city — ‘Change the locks,’ protesters urge

Some 800 protesters packed the sidewalks outside an auditorium in Mount Vernon, Washington, on Saturday to express their displeasure at the city mayor’s decision to give Fox News host Glenn Beck the key to the city.

“The Fox News personality’s visit Saturday to Mount Vernon had sparked weeks of protests and petitions calling for the cancellation of the visit,” Seattle’s KOMO TV
reported. The station said one protester was arrested when the crowd “surged” during the protests. . .

Hate Mailbag Special

It's been a weird couple of weeks. The Democrats are falling all over themselves to come up with a good health care reform bill, with the unfortunate but predictable consequence that they're, er, falling all over themselves. Meanwhile the wingnuts have gone completely overboard, to the point where elected Republican officials have been egging on armed protesters at town hall meetings. And let's not forget the guy who recently identified himself as a "proud right-wing terrorist" to a cheering crowd, whereupon his Republican congressman said, "There is a great American." WTF? . . .

Top 10 Conservative Idiots, July 13, 2009

Another Monday is upon us. Even with Fridays off these days (a recession trade-off I'm growing attached to), the weekend zooms by, whether I'm laying around like a schlub, or busy with projects. This weekend was a little of column A and a little from column B.

I write these Monday morning posts on Sunday night, so coming up with something interesting can be a challenge sometimes. And it keeps me up past my bedtime. But it is always a little easier when there is a new "Top 10 Conservative Idiots" up over at Democratic Underground. It's a fun way to start the week. Enjoy.

Palin Out Edition

First of all I want to apologize for leaving Free Republic off the list this week. I'd almost finished the Top 10 when the story came along and I was so done with right-wing douchebaggery by that point, I couldn't bring myself to write about it. If you missed it, you can check out the scoop here. And now, on with the show. Sarah Palin (1,2,3) takes her ball and goes home, John Ensign (4) asks mom and dad for some extra pocket money, and Brian Kilmeade (6) is a couple sandwiches short of a picnic. . .

I'm always happy when there is a new "Top 10 Conservative Idiots" column up over at Democratic Underground. For one thing, it gives me something interesting to link to on a Monday morning. And for another, the writer of the column (EarlG) is such an entertaining writer. Of course, then I feel inferior, but it only lasts for a little while. Anyway, enjoy!
