Forget Pot; Why Hasn't Big Liquor Fixed Antiquated State Laws?

This past election cycle, I was onboard our "Legalize It" effort here in Ohio, both for personal and logical reasons. Marijuana should be regulated, taxed and legal in my estimation. It is demonstrably safer than alcohol, which is legal. Moreover, there is a wave of acceptance sweeping the nation for legal pot, rivaled only by the same-sex marriage wave that successfully swept through over the last several years. So, why not?

Ah, dare to dream.
But when you think about it, it's rather amazing that pot is making such headway, when liquor has such a confusing and often times stupid set of restrictions in place against it, from state to state. I'm not talking about age restrictions, here either. I really don't have much problem with 21-and-over being the place we draw the line. Though, honestly, it does make you wonder why "adulthood" is legally scattered from 18-to-21 depending upon what area of law we're talking about. But that's another issue for another day.

If you wants it, you points to it, you
sick, degenerate drinker you!
But NOT on Sunday!!! Heathen!!!
The reason for my interest in this issue has to do with having moved back to Ohio after 20 years in Las Vegas. Liquor laws in Las Vegas are quite liberal, and I was used to being able to run down to Lee's Discount Liquor and buying whatever I wanted, just about whenever I wanted. Prices were reasonable, and there was a lot of competition. You could by most kinds of alcohol just about anywhere in Vegas, from a liquor store to a Walmart, to a grocery, corner quickie mart or even Sam's Club or Costco. Obviously, a dedicated store would have more varieties in both brands and higher proofs, but if you wanted honest-to-god vodka, you could find it just about anywhere.

Not in Ohio. Ohio restricts where you buy it, and when you can buy it. Beyond that, they further slice it by what kind of alcohol, and what proof. I can walk into most grocery or warehouse stores and pick up wine, beer and a bewildering variety of beer- and wine-based pseudo liquors. Sometimes, if you're diluted by half. No joke. Watered down. Most times, if you want a full variety of choices, you have to go to a dedicated state-run liquor store, or be lucky enough to have a grocer that has a full-fledged liquor store within their store. Most don't. Even stores that say they do often don't. Those that do charge far more than I used to pay back in my desert home. And there are restricted hours. Want to pick up something for a party before 1pm on a Sunday? Tough.
lucky, they also have spirits. But virtually always, those spirits are
Paradise in Las Vegas!

Dedicated stores are often dingy, sorrowful looking affairs that make you feel dirty when you walk in the door. If they have any browseable liquor, it's the cheap stuff, with top-shelf brands behind the counter. You literally have to point to what you want, and have them hand it to you. It feels like you're buying porn or something. But there is a world outside of Ohio, and even Las Vegas for that matter. When we've ventured out of our newly re-adopted state, we've made stops in other states, checking out how they do things. West Virginia has more liberal laws, though I can't say the stores I've visited have been particularly inviting. Pennsylvania may have arcane laws, but I must've hit one store at the right time in Pittsburgh, because it had a decent selection, and decent prices. Still nothing like Sin City. Iowa offers a decent grocer-based option, with separate-but-attached liquor stores by the main grocery. Prices are better than Ohio, if not great. And time restrictions are also better.

Binny's! Now that's what I'm talking about!
That was a reasonable option on our recent visit, and we were set to pick up a carload for our home bar. But we ran out of time, and just didn't get around to it. Undeterred, we decided to find something on the way home. At a gas fill-up in Illinois, we noticed our truck stop had a dedicated liquor store. Cool! We grabbed a couple of bottles of whiskey (priced above Nevada, but below Ohio), but were told, in broken English, that we were too early. No sales on Sunday before 10 am! It was 9:15. Okay, then, back on the road. I plugged my request into my phone, and huzzah!!! A liquor discount store in Champaign called "Binny's." And it was right off the freeway!

This is not an ad, but let me tell you, it was a real discovery. It was like Vegas, only better actually. Illinois may very well have perplexing liquor laws that I'm not privy to. But this store was big, it had huge variety. It had low, low prices. And the people were super-friendly. Even Lee's Discount Liquor didn't manage that, most days. Suffice it to say, we stocked up. And just for example, a handle-bottle of JD was at least $20 cheaper there, no joke.

But all of this got me to wondering: why is it this way? Why does each state have a hodge-podge of antiquated, religiously tinged, ridiculous liquor laws in almost 2016? I realize, even Ohioans don't have it as bad as some other--particularly Southern--states, whose laws can be downright bizarre. But why do brewers, distillers and other liquor companies put up with it? Why would they make special, diluted spirits just for Ohio? These are huge companies in some cases. Isn't there a liquor lobby? Wouldn't Lee's or Binny's like to have big box stores in Columbus or Cincinnati? Wouldn't Costco, Sam's or even Kroger? I really don't get it. But I'd like to see a ballot initiative! Maybe if the liquor lobby scratched the marijuana lobby's back. . .

Non-troversy: Obama Says Pot Less Harmful than Alcohol

I can't figure out the problem here. I thought this was a fact that was self-evident. Alcohol is clearly a more dangerous (though socially more acceptable) drug. Where's the controversy?

[Excerpt]

President Obama Says Pot Is Less Dangerous Than Alcohol For The Individual Consumer

In an interview published Sunday by the New Yorker, President Obama said pot is no more dangerous than alcohol — and that marijuana legalization in Colorado and Washington state is an “important” move towards a more just legal system. “I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life,” Obama told reporter David Remnick. “I don’t think it is more dangerous than alcohol.” In fact, the president went on to admit pot was actually less dangerous “in terms of its impact on the individual consumer. . .”

Somebody Finally Noticed: Is John Boehner a Lush?

Image from Wonkette
Boozy. Other than "weepy" or "orange," that is the best descriptive term for Speaker of the House John Boner Boehner.  Whether he is or is not often publicly inebriated is open to speculation, but there is no question that it seems like it. Curiously though, it was only bloggers or the occasional comedian who would say so. And sure, the linked article below is from Wonkette--a blog, if a big one--but it's linked to The Fix and Salon, which makes me think the issue is coming to the fore. Will Boehner have to address it, in a teary-eyed press conference?

[Excerpt]

The Fix: Is John Boehner Hitting The Bottle?

The Fix, as reposted by Salon, had a simple question: Is John Boehner hitting the bottle? But nobody could discover the answer, because the story was one million three hundred seventy-four thousand two hundred twenty five point four words long, all like "Five days before Christmas, House Speaker John Boehner stood before the Republican-controlled Congress—his Plan B alternative for avoiding the fiscal cliff defeated by lack of votes from his own party, a public humiliation and repudiation of the Speaker’s authority, rare in House history. . ."

Lost Weekend

Sorry for the lack of new posts. Alcohol + pool party + lots of Las Vegas sunshine = in bed by 8:15pm! On the bright side, I got lots of sleep, and am energized for the week. But alas, there were no new posts for the week. I'll be sure to get something up later today. In the meantime, happy Monday!

Walmart Heiress Arrested for DUI

Good night, Alice. Image from Raw Story
She's Alice Walton, bitch! And she can get a "first time" DUI even though it wasn't her first time, and even after having killed a person with her car in the past. It pays to be one of the richest people in the world. As Stupid Monkey Planet--who sent this link to me--said,  "You or me... prison."

Walmart heiress spends birthday in jail for DWI

The daughter of Walmart founder Sam Walton spent the final hours of her birthday in jail Friday night after being arrested for drunk driving.

Texas Highway Patrol Senior Trooper Gary Rozzell told The Weatherford Democrat that Trooper Jeff Davis stopped Alice Walton on Interstate 20 in a construction zone for a traffic violation. . .

Legislator Behind Guns in Bars: Arrested for DUI

Irony alert! He didn't just get caught driving drunk, he was caught drunk with a gun! I'd say it was a case of unintended consequences, but. . .mercy. What was the point of allowing guns in bars in the first place? Other countries must think we're insane.

Holiday Cheer: Bad Santa Drunkenly Staggers Through Parking Garage

It's a little early for Holiday Cheer posts, I'll grant you.  And it looks like Santa has had a little too much holiday cheer.  This video has probably been seen by most people who want to see it. But I don't have time to post until the evening hours, and I couldn't resist this one. It is surely bad karma to laugh at another person's misfortune. But just try not to.

Blast from the Past: Beer (and Malt Liquor) Ads from the Old Days

I've run several compilations of old ads and other videos from the past (though not as much lately). Last time, I reran one of my Blasts from the Pasts featuring soda pop ads of the 60s, 70s and 80s.  My good friend Stupid Monkey Planet suggested I should dig up some of the old beer and malt liquor ads. Why not?

My dad filled our rec room with countless beer signs when I was a kid in the 70s. It was only later that I found out what rotten taste in beer he had:  Pabst Blue Ribbon, Old Milwaukee, Blatz, Schlitz Malt Liquor. . .I'm burping just thinking about it. Might work up a beer fart too. . .

1. Schlitz Malt Liquor - Look out for the Schlitz Malt Liquor Bull! He could show up about anywhere, even in racist ads! Stay tuned through the sorta painful first commercial for a second that will really take you back if you're of the 70s generation.

2. Pabst Blue Ribbon - Blecch.  I'll never understand how this beer got a following. I've got Pabst Blue Ribbon on my mind! So, you've got a headache?

3. Old Milwaukee - Old Milwaukee tastes as great as their name! I don't know, does Milwaukee have taste? Do they still wear giant letters on their clothes like on Laverne & Shirley?

4. Colt 45 - Before Billy Dee Williams took Colt 45 to the neighborhood, it had a distinctly different image. What image they were going for isn't clear, but it would seem to be "lounge lizard out of his element." Or something.

5. Miller High Life - It's Miller time! Miller High Life was huge with boomers, and I thought it kinda fazed out after MGD and other offshoots came out. But it's apparently made a comeback in recent years. If you've got the time, we've got the beer. . .MILLER BEER! Great jingle.

6. Lowenbrau - Here's to good friends. . .tonight is kinda special. . . This brand seemed to be catering to very early yuppies, making beer seem upscale. So, tonight, let it be Lowenbrau!

7. Budweiser - This is the coolest ad of the bunch. Budweiser is well known for its impactful commercials, but forget the frogs. Forget wazzzup! This one beats them all hands down. And just try to get that jingle out of your head. When you say Budweiser, you've said it all!

8. Lite Beer from Miller - Miller Light used to be known as "Lite."  And they may have started the trend of star-studded, themed commercials. Miller Light's has spanned decades, using celebrities like John Madden, Bubba Smith and Rodney Dangerfield. Lite Beer from Miller. . .everything you always wanted in a beer. And less.

Tea Party Warns: No "Pre-Gaming" Before Event

Image from source, TPMMuckraker

In other words, no alcohol or drugs before the event. So, let me get this straight. Does that mean the crazy teabaggers are actually going to be off their meds? And on a side-note, yes I'm from Columbus, Ohio. And yes, I'm embarrassed.

[Excerpt]

Tea Party Warns Members: No Pre-Gaming!

In a mass email sent out last night to the supporter list of the Columbus Tea Party and obtained by TPMmuckraker, leaders of the group issued a set of "do's and dont's" for protesters attending an April 15 Ohio State House event -- chief among them: absolutely no pre-gaming.

Specifically, the email warns those planning to attend the "Tax Day" event, "No alcohol (or other mood-enhancer) or pre-drinking. . ."

Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Xander Drunk and Disorderly

Image from source, Examiner

Not Xander! Surely, somebody conjured a demon (probably Dawn, probably by mistake--stupid Dawn!) that possessed him, and caused him to react badly. Giles will soon crack the case, and Xander will be no worse for wear. Or, Nicholas Brendon will go to rehab (again), and the cycle repeats.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer star arrested for drunk and disorderly incident

Television actor Nicholas Brendon, who starred on the hit series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," was forcibly subdued and arrested by police during a violent altercation.

According to law enforcement officers in Venice, California, the 38-year old actor provoked officers into using a stun gun when Brendon allegedly attempted to strike the arresting officers. At the time and place of occurrence the 38-year-old actor was reportedly drunk and boisterous on Wednesday night, which prompted residents to call the police. . .

Tom DeLay: Drunk or Not?

The very first time I ever saw Tom DeLay, I didn't even know what party he belonged to. But I could tell I didn't much like him. Lots of swagger, evangelist hair. . .just yuck. Turned out my instincts were were right, and he is kind of a jerk. Minus the "kind of."

Well, it turns out ol' Tom is a birther. And quite possibly drunk too. On Hardball with Chris Matthews, DeLay slurs through the whole bit, and then says "gift certificate" when he means "birth certificate." You tell me, is The Hammer hammered?

Solution for the Economy: Tax the Booze, Legalize Pot.

Image from oscarmonteforte

This article was passed to me (like a doobie) by Stupid Monkey Planet. I've gotta say, it makes more sense than a lot of other economic plans I've heard. . .

[Excerpt]

Smoke This Recession
It's simple: First we tax the booze. Then we legalize the pot. Done.

. . .Where to begin? How can the city/state refill their empty coffers and further gouge the populace to make ends meet? Increased bridge tolls? A new per-mile driving tax? Heavier parking fines? State parks abandoned and left to seed? Child's play, darling. . .

Dan Aykroyd in Local Las Vegas Liquor Ad

Image from Extreme Mortman

My home town is Columbus, Ohio. And one of the peculiarities there--though this may have changed in the past 14 years--was the State Liquor Store. You could buy beer, wine and "wine coolers" (now, really malt liquor) at the grocery, but the hours were regulated for no particular reason. We did have "beer docks," which were drive-thru jobbies where you could buy beer and snacks. Peculiar, really, drive-thru beer. But their hours were restricted too.

If you wanted selection, or something stronger, you had to go to the State Liquor Store. And in the town I lived in--Delaware--you could browse but not actually touch the liquor. Everything had to be requested. And the hours were lame. Now, imagine my surprise when I moved to Las Vegas in 1994. Not only can you get any kind of liquor under the sun at the local grocery, you can do so 24 hours a day! Oh, and the bars don't have a closing time, but that's a different post.

Even though we can buy just about anything at Vons or Albertsons, the prices fluctuate, and sales are not always on the item you want. So, we rely on the "big box" liquor stores, like Lee's Discount Liquor. Lee's is huge here in Vegas, and has been around for a long time. They have large stores, with wide selections in all varieties of alcohol. And they have great prices, especially if you bring cash. The location nearest our house is staffed with the surliest, most unpleasant retail workers I've ever encountered, but the prices can't be beat.

Local commercials for the chain have been uneven, from mildly amusing to bad. But I saw a commercial last night that cracked me up, starring (in addition to Mr. Lee and his grandson--carryovers from previous ads), Saturday Night Live alumnus Dan Aykroyd! I looked around, and couldn't find the ad available anywhere, but I was so tickled, I wanted to post something from the Aykroyd oeuvre. And he plays Julia Child, who is sauced, so it's appropriate! Here you go. . .

Jack Daniels Selling Well in Bad Economy

Image from source, Clusterstock

Business are downsized (if they're not being bailed out), people are being laid off, Christmas parties are being scaled back (or eliminated). Families and friends are resorting to "Secret Santa" gift exchanges instead of buying for everybody. But at least one product is doing very well this holiday season. Drink up, everybody!

Science is Cool: Beer Goggles are Real!

Image from source, Live Science

It's been said that to a straight guy, a girl's score on a 1-10 scale goes up with each beer he drinks. They call the effect "beer goggles," and while it seems obvious, apparently it is now scientifically proven! Now, what about the adage that the difference between a straight guy and a gay guy is a six pack of beer? I'm thinking they're gonna have to trick the straight guys into participating in that study. . .

[Excerpt]

People Really Do Look Better When You Drink

For the first time, scientists have proven that "beer goggles" are real — other people really do look more attractive to us if we have been drinking.
Surprisingly, the beer goggles effect was not limited to just the opposite sex among the ostensibly straight volunteers recruited for the study — they also rated people from their own sex as
more attractive. . .
