I've never been much of a football fan. In fact, beyond tolerating the Super Bowl for the commercials, I don't watch it at all. So the phrase, "Hail Mary Pass" is to me just a cliche that I vaguely understand.
It's been bandied about a lot lately amongst the political punditry, in response to John McCain's unusual behavior throughout this campaign. Specifically, it refers to McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as a ticket-mate, to the stalling of the Republican National Convention in response to Hurricane Ike, and most recently, the non-suspension suspension of his campaign.
But what I--a football neophyte--didn't realize, is that a Hail Mary Pass is something you do out of desperation at the end of the game. Considering none of the passes worked, is this campaign already over?

Bill Kristol's column from yesterday offered some suggestions for "How McCain Wins." Kristol wants McCain to pull even more "impetuous" stunts like his airlift into Washington to save the bailout. Kristol also jumps on the "Free Sarah Palin" bandwagon, because obviously giving that one the keys to the store is going to save everything. . .
