Nevada Considering Taxing Odometers?

Everybody hates taxes. And it seems almost inconceivable that Nevada's wacky Governor Jim Gibbons would even consider levelling a new one. Let alone one crazier than he is. This despite the fact that Gibbons was handed a surplus (unless I'm misremembering my local history), and is currently presiding over a state with a huge shortfall.  I can't think of anything that could be taxed that assaults the feeling of "freedom" than our cars. Maybe hookers?

Anyway, this is one tax that would have very little impact on yours truly.  My 12-year-old Jeep had only 51,000 miles on it when I traded it in.  I travel about 16 miles a day. So they're not going to be hitting the jackpot on me.

Nevada officials are studying a controversial proposal that would impose a tax on drivers based on the number of miles they drive.


The Nevada Department of Transportation is considering a fee on vehicle miles traveled or VMT. In short, the more miles you drive, the more you pay. Highways and bridges would get more money, but the odometer on your car would essentially be a tax bill from Uncle Sam. . .
