Rachel Maddow Overtakes Keith Olbermann in Ratings

I'm a regular--some might say obsessive--viewer of both shows. And some of Olbermann's ratings erosion is likely due to his frequent absences (because of the ill health, then death of his father). But I still feel a little proud of Rachel, like I "discovered" her or something. I've been a fan since her early days at Air America Radio, and one of her biggest cheerleaders since her first appearances at MSNBC.  Plus, the photo is cute.

Keith Olbermann Takes A Ratings Backseat To Rachel Maddow At MSNBC

Has Keith Olbermann slipped from his top ratings perch within MSNBC?

During the month of April* MSNBC’s Countdown With Keith Olbermann trailed the Rachel Maddow Show in primetime adults 25-54 ratings, the demo group that news advertisers target. Although Countdown also trailed Maddow in March, Keith was gone from the show effectively the entire month.

The Rachel Maddow Show is up noticeably in the adults 25-54 demo since January-February, but Countdown has been flat. . .

  1. Lawrence O'Donnell's guest-hosting of "Countdown" was absolutely terrible. He mistakenly thought he could shout the headlines at the top of the show to make up for his weak voice. He gets overwrought about issues and has gone off the deep end several times, e.g., on "The McLaughlin Group" about Mitt Romney's Mormonism and on "Morning Joe" about 9/11. On the premiere of "The Last Word," he insipidly defended the Senate Democrats' decision not to vote on tax relief before the elections, got all fuddled up while reading the teleprompter at one point, lobbed softballs at Joe Biden, and came across as the ultimate insider. Viewers need more talk about issues, not campaign strategy and inside-the-beltway lore. If this is how O'Donnell proceeds in the coming weeks, I predict he will last about as long as Phil Donahue did.

  2. I really like Lawrence, and you're right, his initial performances as a host were stiff, and not so good. He's very good as a guest. And he's gotten better.

Donohue got canned for his opposition to the Iraq War, not ratings. He was the highest rated host on the network at the time.
