US Air Strikes ISIS in Syria

Allegedly, this won't happen.
I've mostly avoided this subject, because I truthfully have no idea what is bad or what is good. Asea and adrift, sorry. But I thought I'd just mark the spot on the calendar. As of now, it's on.

U.S. airstrikes hit ISIS inside Syria for first time

American jets began bombing ISIS targets in Syria early Tuesday, raising U.S. involvement in the war-torn country and sending a forceful message to the terror group. The airstrikes focused on the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa, a U.S. official told CNN, though other locations were hit as well. They're the first strikes against the terror group inside the country since President Barack Obama's announcement this month that he was prepared to expand the American efforts beyond targets in Iraq. . . .

President Obama on Iraq: Not Ruling Anything Out

Image from source, NBC News

There are one or two things I'd like to rule out, please. And I'd also like to point out that the same guys who championed the disaster that was the Iraq War are the same guys championing going in again. Let's not, okay? Sure, we broke it. But it wasn't in pristine shape in the first place. Can't we just leave it on the floor in pieces, and pretend we didn't see it fall?

Obama on Iraq Turmoil: 'I Don't Rule Out Anything'

President Barack Obama said Thursday "I don;t rule out anything" when it comes to a U.S. response to worsening violence in Iraq. Speaking to reporters briefly after meeting with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott at the White House, Obama said "my national security team is looking at all the options" available in stemming an advance by Islamic extremists in the north and west of the country. "This is an area we've been watching with a lot of concern, not just over the last days but the last several months," Obama said, adding that his administration has "been in close consultation with the Iraqi government to try to address problems they have. . .

SYRIAsly, Can We Not Get Into Another War?

Image from Wikipedia. Did you know for sure
where Syria was?
We're in the last week of what is usually the "dog days of August," when the news is boring and nothing noteworthy seems to happen. Kids are going back to school, so for them the world is school this week, and the last three weeks were the summer careening out of control and crashing into school. I suppose parents of those children have a bit of a lift this week, but for the rest of us, late August is meh.

And blogging has been, even further back into the summer. Yes, stuff happened, but not a lot that I was eager to write about. Fortunately, summer gives a blogger some cover: nobody is writing quite at full strength in the summer, certainly not as stridently as usual. But here we are, with Syria. A deadly serious, deeply complicated, morally gray (as in, not knowing exactly who to support), politically gray (as in, Rand Paul and John McCain on opposite sides) fuster cluck.

I've already said in a previous post that Syria is past my pay grade (particularly since this is a hobby, and I don't get paid). Frankly, any Mideast crisis is out of my wheelhouse, and my deep personal interest. I'm not Jewish, I'm not fundamentalist Christian, I'm not Muslim. . .so, I have no emotional tie to Israel. I had to look up Syria on a map today (I was right about where it was, but I wasn't sure). I'm smart enough to know that there are implications that tie into relations with Russia and with China, and pissing them off is problematic. And I know that while President Obama has a number of options on his plate, none of them are good options.

Imagine having his job. Half a dozen shitty choices, none with clean outcomes, and all of them bound to draw fiery criticism from the right and the left. The left because they're already weary of war, and many are convinced that Obama is far further right than they thought they were getting. The right because they hate everything the President does from how he ties his shoes to how he licks stamps. The only thing almost everybody agrees on: "We've got to do something."

You know what troubles me about that? Those are the exact words my mother used, years after the Iraq War was started, as an answer to me about why we were in Iraq. As a Bush voter, and staunch Republican, she said that after September 11, we had to do something. I pointed out that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 and that there were no weapons of mass destruction. Didn't matter to Mom, we had to do something. Apparently, even if "something" is just blowing some shit up in the general area of the perceived problem.

I have a reputation for being irreverent, callous and blunt. But I don't mean to give short shrift to the suffering of the Syrian people, particularly the children. I suppose it's the fact that the Syrian government was already killing them indiscriminately before last week, that's got me wondering why now. Is it the President's "red line" statement from a while back, and that the Syrians apparently crossed it? Also, truth be told, kids and adults are being killed in lots of countries around the world. Is it only if they're poisoned that we have to send in the military?

Anyway, for someone who feels ill-equipped to really blog about this topic, I've managed to ramble on at length. I guess I just wanted to put my thoughts out there for anyone who happened by. And to explain why there may not be a heavy coverage of the topic on the blog. I suspect that when Right Wing World really gets cranked up on the topic, there will be an opportunity to at least pick apart the details, and maybe flesh things out a little. The nuts at Free Republic (for example) can be so clearly wrong about something, that it can crystalize what is right. . .or rather, correct.  See? They're good for something!

Military strikes on Syria 'as early as Thursday,' US officials say

The U.S. could hit Syria with three days of missile strikes, perhaps beginning Thursday, in an attack meant more to send a message to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad than to topple him or cripple his military, senior U.S. officials told NBC News on Tuesday. . .

President Obama Announces Change in Direction in Afghanistan

I'm still not really sure where I stand on this. My gut says, pull out now, what's this long-term thing about? But, I must confess, I've had a mighty resistance to "getting" Afghanistan, I don't know why. Even on those occasions where I tried to get myself to pay attention, I've ended up zoning out. I'm not proud of it, but neither would I then pretend I do get it. The part that sounds the best is winding down our combat presence there. Though I'm a little unclear on why our military is performing long-term non-combat tasks. That's not defense, really. . .is it?

Food Fight: History of Warfare Shown With Food

And now for something completely different. . .

This is very strange, and therefore a perfect thing to post in the middle of a Saturday night. See if you can figure out which nations are fighting, based on the food. Can you tell I've had a cocktail or two before posting this?

Viet Nam Hoaxes Revealed

In my last post, I pointed out that the leaders of our government are prone to making us distrustful of anything they say. To be fair (and balanced), they've apparently been at it for a very long time. Surprise!

Attack on Iran Imminent?

Photo from source, ThinkProgress.org

The possibility of a US attack on Iran has been buzzing loudly for weeks now. It reminds me of the buildup to the Iraq war, where we all were resigned to it as an inevitability. This time, to me, it all feels like smoke and mirrors. Is there any there there? And is there enough of our military to go around?

It's almost as if Bush feels that his Presidency hasn't been a spectacular enough failure, and he needs to put a cherry on top. Geez, I hope this isn't true.

[Excerpt]

The New York Sun, a reliable neoconservative outlet that has advocated for a Dick Cheney presidential campaign, declares today: “Attack on Iran Said To Be Imminent.” The article’s lead states:

In a sign that U.N. Security Council-based diplomacy is losing steam, a number
of sources are reporting that a military strike against Iran’s nuclear
facilities may be imminent. France and America also are pushing for tighter
economic sanctions against Tehran, without U.N. approval. Yesterday’s edition of Le Canard Enchaîné, a French weekly known for its investigative journalism, reported details of an alleged Israeli-American plan to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities. The frontpage headline read: “A report sent to the Elysée — Putin tells Tehran: They’re going to bomb you!”
Ironically, the right-wing clamor for war is becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. . .

Drumbeat to War With Iran Continues

I'm still baffled by the fervor some of the right wing has with war in general, and war with Iran in specific. I've yet to hear a definitive reason given for the urgency of war with Iran. All the reasoning sounds suspiciously like the rationale for invading Iraq, almost five years ago.

And in case you don't remember, the Iraq rationale turned out to be wrong, and had to be revised many times. I'm not even sure I can name the one they're using now, can you? And I must ask, suppose Bush goes through with it and bombs Iran. Is he any more prepared for the aftermath than he was for Iraq or Katrina? All of this makes me nervous. And it definitely bears watching.

U.S. Officials Begin Crafting Iran Bombing Plan

WASHINGTON — A recent decision by German officials to withhold support for any new sanctions against Iran has pushed a broad spectrum of officials in Washington to develop potential scenarios for a military attack on the Islamic regime, FOX News confirmed Tuesday.

Germany — a pivotal player among three European nations to rein in Iran's nuclear program over the last two-and-a-half years through a mixture of diplomacy and sanctions supported by the United States — notified its allies last week that the government of Chancellor Angela Merkel refuses to support the imposition of any further sanctions against Iran that could be imposed by the U.N. Security Council.

The announcement was made at a meeting in Berlin that brought German officials together with Iran desk officers from the five member states of the Security Council. It stunned the room. . .

AT LAST! Our Stupid Monkey Mission in Iraq has been Defined! Whew!

Posted by Stupid Monkey Planet

Then that barrel of monkeys Dick Cheney must've pleasantly piped in with something like..."Georgie, when you're finished playing with Saddam... Can I have the all of the dirty oil? I promise to share. I just don't want those poor Iraqis or you to have to deal with the financial responsibility that comes with this dirty, dirty delightful crude..."
