Political Paradies (a-) Plenty! It's a Rocky Mountain Mike 3-pack!

Somehow, Rocky Mountain Mike had time to move all the way to the Rockies from North Carolina, change his name from Mike in Raleigh, and continue to crank out numerous endlessly entertaining political song and commercial parodies! I don't know when he sleeps. Makes me feel guilty for sort of lagging here on the blog.

Anyway, Mike works so fast, by the time I check in on him, he's got a whole bunch of new bits up. Here are three of his most recent.

Funniest Jon Stewart/Stephen Colbert Rally Signs

Some of the most outrageous and/or hilarious images to come out of politics in the last four years have been those of political rally signs. In the case of the tea parties, much of the humor comes from accidental misspellings or basic grammar unfamiliarity. Also, they can be horrifically inappropriate, with Nazi imagery, or (thinly veiled) calls to violence.  The Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear this past weekend didn't contain much outrage. But there was a lot of humor to be had!

FOX "News" Displays Going Rouge Instead of Going Rogue

The crafty editors of The Nation have written a Sarah Palin critique book called Going Rouge: An American Nightmare, which bares some similarity to Palin's real book, Going Rogue: An American Life. The legendary FOX "News" production department displayed the wrong book cover to their audience yesterday. I personally can't wait until Rouge hits bookstores, and Palinites who aren't so good with the spelling, pick it up by mistake. You know it's going to happen!

Conservatives Don't Know Stephen Colbert is Satire

Satire, like sarcasm, isn't always obvious to some people. If you have a good sense of humor, understand irony, and have a decent BS detector, you're probably a fan of satire. In my experience, many conservatives suffer from a weak sense of humor, absolutely no understanding of irony, and a BS detector that only goes off if they hear something that isn't already in their world view.

It's too much of a generalization to apply that across the board, of course. But look at examples of "conservative humor." Glenn Beck. Rush Limbaugh. Dennis Miller. An American Carol. The 1/2-Hour News Hour. Conservative humor seems to try twice as hard for half the laugh. There is often a mean-spirited undercurrent to it, not to mention an almost complete lack of subtlety. Remember those Truly Tasteless Joke Books? That would be about the level of advanced conservative humor.

Here's a litmus test for you. Ask your conservative friend/family member what they think of the movies Airplane! or The Naked Gun or Hot Shots!* If they pronounce them "stupid," instead of "hilarious," you've got yourself an irony/humor/satire-resistant conservative. Those same types of people apparently think that Stephen Colbert of Comedy Central's Colbert Report is one of them! Colbert's whole shtick is to lampoon right-wing bloviators like Bill O'Reilly. But you have to be able to see that, I guess.

*The ultimate irony is that one of the men instrumental in making those movies is David Zucker, who is also behind An American Carol. Like Dennis Miller, it seems when he became an "out" conservative, his humor evaporated. Weird, right?

Please Don't Vote for a Republican (Billboard #1)

A couple of days ago, a wingnut with some advertising money took out a "Please Don't Vote for a Democrat" billboard, complete with September 11th imagery. It was incongruous given who was President at the time of the attack. And it was also self serving, as it seems the guy is trying to sell a CD of "patriotic music."

But I think this kind of billboard might be used to Democrats' advantage. And we don't have to misdirect or lie to do it, either. As I mentioned in a previous post, I haven't much time to blog tonight, but I did have time to whip this up. It was a quickie, so not as good as it could be. But I have a feeling I'll think of a few more. Enjoy!

Jonah Goldberg's Book Filed as Parody at Amazon

Hee hee! Hey, I usually make it a practice to read a book before passing judgement on it. In fact, it burns me up if I really, really like a book, and somebody who hasn't read it trashes it. But I'm making an exception here.

Why? Because Jonah Goldberg, author of Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning, has been making the talk show, cable news and right-wing talk radio circuit, discussing this book at length. And his premise is rather laughable. He's basically saying that despite criticisms of conservatives resembling fascists, the definition actually fits liberals.

After watching Golberg's feeble attempt at selling his book on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart (see video here), the objective of the book just fell flat for me. Stewart eviscerated him and his premise.

Anyhow, here's the funny part. Amazon.com has classified Liberal Fascism as a political parody! Hilarious.
