With the ascendancy of Glenn Beck as "America's Voice," and the never ending parade of nuttiness coming from even elected GOP politicians, I can get depressed. It doesn't help that the total victory of progressives/liberals/Democrats in 2008 hasn't born much fruit. But I have been wondering just how pervasive all of this conservative control of the news cycle really is in America.
As a blogger, I'm far more attuned to the 24-hour news cycle and politics than a lot of my countrymen. I know who Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Howard Dean, and Rahm Emmanuel are, and I know they aren't quite the demons they are made out to be by the right-wing noise machine. But do most Americans even know who these people are, let alone the fiction they are painted to be? Maybe not. Maybe things aren't quite as surreal as they seem. Maybe the bizarro world of FOX "News" and right-wing talk radio is just appealing to a very small (but noisy) crowd? Oh, I hope so. . .
