The story is a little confusing, and sort of a subversion of how these things often go. There was a Republican, a Democrat and an Independent in the Kansas Senate race. The Republican was leading--barely--while the other two split the vote. So, the Democrat is dropping out, which leaves an Independent to challenge the generally unpopular Republican. And all of this could prevent the GOP from taking control of the Senate this year? Hey, whatever it takes, as long as it's above board.
