Rep. Pete Stark Unleashes a Firestorm

Rep. Pete Stark (D-California) unleashed a firestorm today, speaking forcefully about the SCHIP program, and its relative cost to the Iraq war. His comments were feisty, all right, and incendiary. And while his phraseology was certainly harsh (and he had to know it would be), he sets himself apart from most of the rest of the Democrats in Congress, who show nowhere near as much backbone. And you can be sure, he's just been added to Sean Hannity's "finger-ticking" list of Democratic E-e-evil.

But don't buy for a minute that conservative bloggers and pundits are actually outraged about this. They love it, they eat it up. It gives them something to rant about, rather than trying to defend blocking health care to kids, or the President's policy in Iraq.

[Excerpt]

Stark Language Angers Republicans
The debate over the fate of the State Children's Health Insurance Program was a surprisingly desultory affair, marked by the occasional charge of "socialized medicine" from Republicans or "heartlessness" from Democrats.

Desultory, that is, until Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.) grumbled at Republicans: "You don't have money to fund the war or children. But you're going to spend it to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the president's amusement."
