John Edwards Still In the Race?

It's funny how hope can make you be unrealistic. Yes, I was an John Edwards supporter, and was bummed by his dropping out of the race. But initially, I was suspicious about his withdrawal. For one thing, he kept using the word "suspend" when refferring to his withdrawal. "Suspend" can mean temporary--could it be?

Then, there was the fact that he seemed so "full speed ahead" just the night before. What was this about? Why drop out before Super-Duper Tuesday? The timing was just odd. So, naturally, many Edwards supporters (including me, initially) crossed their fingers and hoped something surprising was going to happen. And even still, the barest hint of Edwards staying in has his followers ready to grasp for any straw.

But let's be realistic here. Suppose Edwards did poke his head out and say, "I'm back in!" It's too late. Obama and Clinton--already portrayed by the media to be a two-person contest--are now just that in the eyes of voters. If Edwards does have something up his sleeve, it's just not a trump card. He simply, and sadly, cannot win.

Edwards Wants To Remain On R.I. Ballot

The order of names on Rhode Island's presidential primary ballot will be determined Friday.

Secretary of State Ralph Mollis is scheduled to hold a lottery at 5 p.m.

Mollis' office said the Democratic candidates are expected to be Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

John Edwards dropped out of the Democratic race this week and initially, his campaign asked the secretary of state to remove his name. But NBC 10 has learned that Edwards' campaign has since asked for Edwards' name to remain on the ballot. . .
