Oh, please, make it stop. Or not, if you're of the opinion that more Americans see John McCain's current strategy--stupid political ads--as a sign of weakness. McCain has been at this tactic for a couple of weeks now, ad after ad slamming Barack Obama on image more than anything. At the same time, he's offering little or nothing on any positive alternative McCain might have.
Let's be honest. John McCain's campaign relies on image as much as Obama's does. The image of a war hero, of a maverick of a straight talker. We're obliged to let the "war hero" label go unquestioned, even though John Kerry was robbed of that status. But "maverick" and "straight talker"--those terms may have defined McCain in 2000, but surely no longer.
Now, McCain is picking up on Rush Limbaugh's theme of the week. Obama as "Messiah" or "Barack Obama, the Most Merciful." As idiotic as it is to take the fervor of some of Obama's admirers and act as though Obama purposefully presents himself as a Deity, it goes from Rush's mouth to McCain's campaign. And that--my friends--is reason enough to be wary of a John McCain Presidency. That and he's given us few reasons to vote for him. How is it "straight talk" to air a political ad that consists almost entirely of misleadingly edited, out of context comments?
One short-sighted aspect of this (and other videos) should be pointed out. The end of the ad says "Barack Obama may be 'The One,' but is he ready to lead?" Um, Mr. McCain? Based on the massive crowds and chanting "disciples" you show him in front of. . .I'd say yes, he's ready to lead. Or certainly to be followed.
