Palin Fans Trying to Alter History to Fit Sarah's Paul Revere Story

The Karl Rove Alternate Reality Machine used to take care of stuff like this. Now, it's the Palinites trying--inartfully to do it. But don't worry, Sarah! No matter what you say or do, your cultish legion of fans will always love--and make excuses--for you.

Palin Fans Trying to Edit Wikipedia Paul Revere Page

Man, you’ve gotta almost admire the sheer blind dedication of Sarah Palin’s wingnut acolytes.

Now they’re trying like crazy to edit the Wikipedia page for “Paul Revere” to make it match Palin’s botched version of history. Here’s the Revision history of Paul Revere; check out the edits that are being reversed. . .

FOX "News" Uses Tina Fey Image Instead of Sarah Palin

Image from source, Talking Points Memo
FOX "News" is legendary for mislabelling, distorting and misattributing things. They'll call a scandal plagued Republican a Democrat. They'll use PhotoShopped pictures to make people look dumb, without acknowledging it. But it is rare indeed for them to get it so wrong on one of their own!

Oops! Fox News Uses Tina Fey Graphic In Sarah Palin Story

No doubt 30 Rock's Tina Fey does a great impression of Sarah Palin. But surely she's not such a dead ringer for the former Alaska governor and current One Nation bus touring non-candidate that she'd ever be confused for the real thing in a news story-and if, somehow, she was, you can bet it wouldn't happen at Fox. I mean, she works there, so you'd assume they have a pretty good idea what the lady looks like. Right? Um, right? . . .

Anthony Weiner Roast: After Lying, He Finally Comes Clean

Well, if it's going to cause all this trouble, at
least he's in good shape. Photo from HuffPo
Last week, when the only evidence for "Weinergate" was a closeup shot of a stretched out pair of grey boxer briefs, I gave Rep. Anthony Weiner the benefit of the doubt. Though he was being dodgy and lawyerly with his language, I really felt that he'd been punk'd. I figured the wiener shot was from his computer/phone/whatever, but that he'd been hacked or pranked by Andrew Breitbart and his goons.  I was wrong, but I had nothing more at the time to go on than the reputations of the people involved.

Now, Weiner's reputation is in the gutter, where Breitbart's reputation has languished for some time. In fact the saddest spectacle of this whole affair is that Breitbart is going to act and feel vindicated. The fact of the matter is, Breitbart is scum. And that is the best assessment I could give the man. And look at what his vindication consists of: the exposure of a Congressman's sex scandal where there was no actual sex. A scandal where every piece of (released) photographic evidence can be aired unblurred on network television.* Breitbart has potentially brought down a marriage and the career of a man who never made an issue of "family values," or chastity or monogamy. Weiner may be a lot of things, but he wasn't a hypocrite, making me wonder why this revelation was necessary or newsworthy.

I'm pissed at Weiner, because he lied. At the same time, I understand why he lied. There was no dignified way to come clean. It was going to be very embarrassing, and he was hoping he could dodge his way out of it.  But up against a force determined to bring him down, that just wasn't going to happen. Ultimately, this was none of our business, and Breitbart is no better than a National Enquirer expose.**

Anthony Weiner Press Conference: Admits Sending Racy Pictures, Refuses To Resign

Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) insisted he’s staying in office Monday, even as a string of embarrassing new revelations and photos emerged that apparently reveal a hidden, lascivious online life. . .

Read more at: Huffington Post

* Yes, I'm aware, there is allegedly a more explicit photo out there, a possibility that Weiner himself copped to. But in this day and age--and going forward--I think the percentage of people who have a naughty photo of themselves is only going to grow. And a large percentage of those are going to find their way to the internets.

** And, yes, The National Enquirer broke the John Edwards story. That story, however, was much more newsworthy, in that Edwards had made his marriage and family life a focal point in his presidential campaigns. Not to mention the fact that the affair, pregnancy, birth and cover up happened during a presidential campaign. Quite a different story than a Congressman who likes to get flirty online, IMO.

Rick "Frothy Mixture" Santorum is Officially Running for President

Image from source, Los Angeles Times
Assuming that his announcement that he was running for president would make him the fecal focal point of the media today, Rick Santorum was sadly disappointed. A seminal moment, it was not. The Weinergate story (more on that in a bit) sort of cock blocked him, I guess you could say. And now that he's shot his wad, I think he's spent. Unless he's got something very frothy on tap, it's going to take a lot to shoot past what ever story is leaving its mark on the daily rags.  Okay, I'm done.

Blast from the Past: Cyndi Lauper

I say this with sadness: though Cyndi Lauper is an outrageously talented woman, and people still know who she is, her music is tragically stalled in the 80s. I don't know why this is. I don't know if she has a bad agent. Maybe she ticked someone in the industry off? She should by all rights have had two or three "comebacks" by now, and be sharing the "diva" status of Cher or Tina Turner. Maybe she'll surprise us yet. In the mean time, here are some of the hits (and other songs) that make Cyndi one of my favorite artists.

Sarah Palin Appears on FOX "News" Sunday as Featured Guest

This morning, when I started the DVR to watch the Sunday morning political showathon, I noticed that Meet the Press wasn't in the queue. Yep, pre-empted by tennis or something. Face the Nation is always bumped, because it is on at the same time as two other shows, and This Week is always on later (sometimes much later) in our region. So all that was there was FOX "News" Sunday with Chris Wallace.

Sigh. Okay, make the coffee, go have a constitutional, and then brave the vaguely creepy Wallace. And who pops up first? Sarah freakin' Palin. I thought when her bus tour to nowhere petered out that we might get a respite from mama grisly. But there she was. Looking very TV-ready, with fluffed up hair, glossy lips, an elaborate--yet tasteful--crucifix necklace, deep tan, and commanding--yet feminine--white top. Clearly, the people who do up the FOX "News" babes got a crack at her. [Continued below]

Anyway, though Palin always manages to talk in endless stream of consciousness word salad sentences, she managed to mostly be succinct this morning. Wallace asked her several policy questions that Palin has no background in, and she hit the softballs back with slightly less folksiness than usual. She managed to get through the interview without tripping on her tongue, or making a major gaffe. And her cultish fans will be thrilled about that. They will also no doubt ignore that Palin was appearing on a program produced by her employer. That she could have been coached, prompted or scripted remains not only possible, but likely.

Anyway, what we learned from the mavericky rogue, included:

- She didn't screw up the Paul Revere story, she was just giving us the less famous part of the story (why, I have no idea)*.
- She's ponderin' the run for president, and turnin' over rocks, but she hasn't decided yet, doggone it!
- Her bus tour wasn't a family vacation or a publicity tour, it was a history tour!
- She's really sorry she stepped all over Mitt Romney's toes (or ran them over) when he announced his run. Don't get your magic underwear all in a twist there, Mittens!

*Incidentally, everyone who is trying to spin Palin's rambling Revere story as accurate (including the person who posted the above video at YouTube): you're full of it. Palin's delivery was abysmal, and her "facts" sounded like they went through a food processor. She burped up "bells" and "guns" and "warned the British." If she were giving an oral report in a history class (or even if this were a pageant answer), I seriously doubt she'd have made the grade. So give it up. She's a twit.

News of the Weird: "Foreskin Man" Comic (San Francisco Circumcision Ban)

Sorry, all the good dick jokes were stolen by
the Anthony Weiner story. Image from
source, Joe.My.God.
A few topics will cause instantaneous flame wars on the internets: gay marriage, abortion rights, evolution vs. creationism. . . and circumcision.  If you were unaware, the topic of circumcision--pro or con--will draw more comments than most other topics, and will also come down to a very black or white argument. It seems people are pro or con, with very little in the middle.

So, the fact that there is a proposed circumcision ban in San Francisco of course brings out both sides. Now, they're not proposing that circumcision be banned outright. Only that you shouldn't be allowed to perform one on a baby without their informed consent. And since a baby can't give informed consent, the law would basically make the surgery an 18-or-older type of thing. Which actually sounds reasonable to me, but will play out in our real world much like trying to remove "In God We Trust" from our money. It should be done, but it won't be.

And the funny thing about circumcision is that it sort of boils down to what you know, or what you own, mostly. It's like iPhone vs. Android. . .you'll declare the one that you have the best. So an circumcised dude will declare his the best, and an uncut guy will insist that the other guy has no idea what he's missing. All of that said, I never imagined a comic book on the subject, or a superhero championing the cause.

Sarah Palin Mangles History of Paul Revere's Ride

Sarah Palin has often mocked President Barack Obama's "professorial" or "academic" manner of speaking. Palin herself is in no danger of ever being put into that same category. As is typical for this mistress of the "pageant answer," she just starts talking, filling an endless sentence with words, hoping that no one will notice that she's not really saying anything. Or that what she is saying is completely wrong. Also, there. Too.

And now a word from Keith Olbermann. . .

Computer Woes: My Ongoing Mac Experience

This is a status update on my experience with life using an Apple Macintosh computer. I bought it from a friend of a friend a year ago or so, to broaden my computer experience. Since my experience in computer graphics--and computers in general--has been on the PC side, practically from its infancy, my Mac knowledge was almost zero. Time to learn.

Since my notebook PC was so terribly slow, my decision was to replace it with a Mac, while keeping my desktop PC. But, I didn't want to outlay a fortune for an experiment. The solution was to buy a Mac that was a couple of years old, and maybe already had some graphics software installed. The one I found is a PowerBook G4, a no longer supported, but at one time top of the line Apple computer. And it has the Adobe Creative Suite 3 installed, as well as Microsoft Office 2007. Sweet!

Not so much, as it turns out. As a web surfing machine, the Mac turns out to be about as slow as the old Intel Celeron machine I ditched. Even with the memory maxed out, the Adobe software is insufferable to run. I can hear Mac enthusiasts saying "don't judge the Mac on the performance of such an old machine!" But why not? The CS3 software was MADE for the PowerMac, and this one has as much memory as it can handle. It should work better than this.

Add to this the Mac's horrible handling of even basic tasks like Google's Blogger software (selecting text, handling basic HTML, like text sizes and bolding and italics), and the stalling out of the Safari web browser. YouTube videos that have to be played one time through, and then again before they are smooth. . . My list goes on and on. My new Samsung Epic 4G cell phone is faster online.

This is not a criticism of the person who sold the computer to me. It's a criticism of the Mac.  Yes, I'm aware that mine is now six years old. But we have a fleet of older computers at work, all PCs, none of which were top of the line when purchased. And all of them can run rings around my PowerMac. Not to mention, there is no task I can't complete faster in the CorelDraw graphics suite, than in the painfully obtuse and slow Adobe suite.  And you know what? Even the very, very, very old Microsoft Office 97 suite I have on my PC works better than Office 2007 on the Mac!

As I type this, my cursor is lagging behind my typing. Fortunately, I am a touch typist. But so far, my Mac experiment has been a bust. What it has done for me, is familiarize me with some of the differences between PC and Mac. But the Mac is only different, not better. Yes, the Apple designs are pretty. And they have--for some reason--a "cool" reputation. But is it deserved?

Former Presidential Hopeful John Edwards Indicted

Image from source, New York Times
More than four years ago, the Democratic field for the 2008 presidential campaign was very strong. Late in March 2007, I went with my friend Stupid Monkey Planet to an SEIU event here in Las Vegas featuring all of the candidates: Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Chris Dodd, Bill Richardson, Dennis Kucinich (?) and John Edwards. This was right after Edwards' wife, Elizabeth, announced the relapse of her cancer, and all eyes (and cameras) were on the couple. The Monkey and I were right behind her in the bleachers, so we even ended up in the video of the event.

At the time, it was clear that Edwards, Obama and Clinton were the three it was going to boil down to. Obama was impressive with his intelligence and unscripted answers to questions (asked by Margaret Carlson, I think), and no, there was no teleprompter. Clinton worked the crowd like a pro, and really wowed me. But Edwards was my choice after that day. There was something so earnest, so sincere about him. And there was my empathy for Elizabeth, and let's face it, Edwards cut a dashing figure. I could really picture him as president. Then, he turned out to be a scumbucket. And the Democratic Party really dodged a warhead, didn't they?

People Who Live in Glass Showers Shouldn't Throw Loofahs?

Thanks to Stupid Monkey Planet for reminding me to post this clip from Thursday's The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell. In it, Lawrence reminds FOX "News" star Bill O'Reilly that he really has no place making fun of  Rep. Anthony Weiner, when O'Reilly has his own embarrassing sex scandal.

By the way, can we please get a little perspective on this Weiner thing? A picture of underpants does not really (ahem) rise to the level of sex scandal, does it? Especially when it hasn't been proven that this photo was actually sent by the Congressman. I don't care if it's actually a photo of him. Who knows, maybe his new wife snapped a pic of some "morning wood," and he really was hacked.

Photo of the Day: Sarah Palin, Media Whore

This little act of semi-vandalism perhaps perfectly encapsulates what Sarah Palin is up to with her family vacation/bus tour. She's apparently not running for president, or if she is, she's tryin' to break the mold, you betcha. But that bus with the tacky wrap-job, with the over-the-top patriotic imagery and slogans, the big Palin autograph. . .it all points to what she's been all along: a media whore. It's really as simple as that.

Separated at Birth: Gov. Christie and Mr. Creosote

"After dinner mint? It's wafer thin. . ."
It's not like I'm trying to be mean here. I myself am on a diet to bring down my weight from an all-time worst (it's working, by the way). I had two thoughts when seeing this picture featured on The Drudge Report this morning, with the link, "Iowa. . ." First was, "He looks like Mr. Creosote from Monty Python's The Meaning of Life." And the second was, "Is this the most flattering picture Drudge could find?" I mean seriously, this is supposedly their great white whale holy grail, right? And he went with that shot?

Blogiversary: Greenlee Gazette Hits 4 Years!

I used to write these blogiversary posts once a month as self-incentive to keep going. I stopped doing that several months ago, but I think it's worth noting that I've hit four years of blogging. It's certainly not a point that I thought I'd hit, ever. I've recounted the birth of the blog a few times in the past, but just suffice it to say that it was started in the depths of the second Bush term, and the world was a different place.

Different in a way of course. Many things are the same. The economy, which had shown signs of slipping in 2007, really hit the skids in 2008. A lot of people don't remember that the economy tanked before Barack Obama was elected, or even nominated, but it's true. Anyway, all of the political bogeymen that once haunted my dreams are now employed by FOX "News," or pretending to run for president. And that's probably the most surprising thing about hitting the four year mark: once again, we're entering a presidential campaign.

Last time around, I was exhausted by the old regime. I was perhaps a little too optimistic about the prospect of a Democratic President in general, and Barack Obama in particular. I figured anything would be better though, and I still think it is. I can't imagine what the last two-and-a-half years would be like if we had President McCain, and Vice President Sarah Palin. Except that we'd probably have to listen to less Palin than we do now. I mean seriously, how often do we hear about Joe Biden?

Anyway, the Obama era, and the upcoming election put my blogging inspiration in an entirely different place than it was when I started. It's kind of like when FOX "News" had to stop pumping up Bush, and had to start bashing Obama, only in reverse. And without all the lying.  I'm now rooting for the home team, while complaining about the players, the coaches and the opposition. I'm a supporter of Obama, but far from an Obamabot. Still--as in 2007--I'd vote for a rock with a "D" on it before voting Republican for president. The 2010 midterms showed me (as if I really needed to be reminded) what they really do when they get elected.

But there I go about politics. I do that a lot. But I also like to go off on weird tangents, and I like to put up amazing, or interesting, or just weird stuff to keep readers interested. And I hope I've injected enough humor even into the serious stuff, to keep from being too heavy handed. And speaking of readers, I was amazed to see my readership spike in the last month to triple the usual. Sure, it was mostly due to two posts, one of which was very old, but whatever. People--over 18,000 of them--came to visit me, and lots of them checked out the joint. It remains to be seen whether they'll keep coming back.

Meanwhile, I'll still be here, blogging away (though with summer coming, maybe not quite as much). As always, thanks to The Other Half for indulging my hobby, to Stupid Monkey Planet for helping me out, to my friends (Marky, Dona, Kardinal, Tracy and many others) who read and boost my ego. And to people like my badger friend from across the political divide, and others who stop by, read and comment.  I do this for me, but it's great to know that other people are paying attention, even if they disagree.  So, thanks for stopping by. Bring your friends!

Weinergate: Conservatives Really Want it to be a Scandal

"Oh, I wish it were just an Oscar Mayer Wiener"
Image from source, Salon
I don't know what to make of the Anthony Weiner (D-NY) "Weinergate" scandal. On one hand, it's a sad statement on the state of politics and news that this is the biggest thing being talked about. Would I be squealing like a stuck pig about it, if this were a high-profile conservative? Probably, but only if they happened to be a "family values" conservative. Anthony Weiner hasn't ever been a sanctimonious prig, so the newsworthiness of the story lags behind the gossipy nature of it.

My take on it is this: Anthony Weiner is a very outspoken liberal who is hated by right-wingers. Andrew Breitbart is a sleazy (even by conservative internet rabble-rouser standards) opportunist who loves to slop mud on people, truth be damned. Anthony Weiner probably had some naughty pix of himself somewhere (though he mustn't have many, or the actual image wouldn't be airable on The Daily Show). Whether or not it was for himself, his wife, or somebody else, I don't know, and it isn't our business. Weiner has dodged the "is it really a photo of him" question, likely because it is. But I have heavy doubts that he actually sent it to anybody, at least not on purpose. My hunch is that somebody culled his phone/online photo album/whatever, found this one salacious shot, and then faked the tweet.

It will really suck if this takes down a good Congressman. Because, I'm doubtful that anything illegal, or possibly even unethical happened. And I'm positive that the people involved in breaking the story are capable of fakery and lies. That much is proven.

[Excerpt]

Right-wingers really, really, really hoping Anthony Weiner story holds up

It is certainly possible that Representative Anthony Weiner sexted a young woman who lives in Washington state. My own theory, based primarily on the fact that the only person who seemed to notice the Tweet supposedly sent by Weiner was a creepy right-winger who is obsessed with the New York Democrat, is that one or more of the congressman's social networking profiles were phished or otherwise compromised, as he says. But I could be wrong! (I'm also inclined to believe that if Weiner were sending inappropriate photos to young women, he'd send them directly and not via a public photo-sharing site. But politicians do dumb things!). . .

Michele "Crazy Eyes" Bachmann: God is Telling Her to Run for President

There's a problem when you hear disembodied voices: how can you really be sure who they are, where they're coming from, or if you're hearing anything at all? And when the entity you believe is talking to you happens to be intangible, invisible and unknowable? Well, then you come off hopelessly egotistical, or off your rocker. I think Michele Bachmann is both, frankly.

Right Wing World: Really, Really, Really BIG Government

When Republicans claim to be for smaller, reduced government, they don't mean it. Sure, they don't like social programs that help people. They don't want any of their taxes going for stuff they don't like (art, science, helping people).  If government is spending money on things they like (guns, bombs, wars), and supporting things they like (prisons, border fences), it's all good. But nowhere does the hypocrisy shine more than when you look at what they really focus on, as soon as they regain power:

- Abortion
- Anti-gay legislation
- Pro-religion anything
- Pro-gun anything

It doesn't matter that they got in by promising to do something about the economy and jobs. Those aren't their real priorities. And when they tick off those four things? They go deeper into crazy town to things like contraception. Yes, seriously.

Daily Show: Sarah Palin, Driving Miss Crazy

Jon Stewart shares our bafflement at what in the hell Sarah Palin's "bus tour" is supposed to be. Is it a Presidential campaign? Is it a high-profile (and thus $$$-raising) ego trip? A magical mystery tour? Who knows? But leave it to The Daily Show to come up with the perfect name for it, Driving Miss Crazy.

Funny or Die: "Nurse Jackée"

Okay, so the best joke is in the title, but it made me laugh, so there you go.
