Original Queen of the Night, Vampira Dies at 86

Before there was Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, there was Vampira. In fact, Elvira's character was once supposed to simply rip off the Vampira character, but Cassandra Peterson created a whole different identity (and good for her).

But Vampira (Maila Nurmi) started the trend of macabre movie hosts, at once sexy and ghoulish. And she parlayed the character into movies. For good or bad, she appeared in what has been almost unanimously deemed "the worst movie of all time," Plan 9 from Outer Space. However lamentable that movie may have been for her resume, there can be no doubt that she had a profound impact on popular culture. And as a vampire, who knows? Maybe she still lurks among us.
