California Same-Sex Unions: Not So Fast!

Well, this was predictable. California's Supreme Court struck down prohibitions against same-sex marriage, and now a misnamed "protect marriage" group is swooping in to try and shut it down. They don't have long to do it, as the marriage licences would become available in about 30 days. But these guys are well funded, and every party needs a pooper.

I'd like to point out just a couple of things here:

1. Same-sex marriage has zero effect on current or future opposite sex marriages. There is nothing to "protect."
2. Same-sex marriages would be a financial boon to California's ailing economy. What demographic group has more disposable income?
3. Civil rights issues should never be subject to a popular vote. The will of the majority should never step on the necks of a minority. Would interracial marriage even be legal today if it were held open to popular vote?
4. I've been with my partner for over 10 years. But symbolically and legally solidifying that bond somehow damages the marriages of people I've never even met? Oh, I forgot, gay relationships are all about the sex, nothing more. After 10 years. Mmm hmm. See, these people will believe anything.

Same-Sex Marriage Ruling Makes Waves

Opponents of same-sex marriage say they will ask the California Supreme Court to delay the implementation of its ruling allowing gay couples to wed in the state as those on both sides of the debate gear up for a November ballot measure aimed at undoing the court's decision. [snip]

In about 30 days, when the court's ruling becomes official, same-sex couples throughout the state will no longer be denied marriage licenses. But a motion to extend the waiting period to November will be filed soon, said Mathew Staver, a lawyer for Campaign for California Families, one of the groups fighting to preserve the marriage ban. . .
