Warning to Computer Users: Windows XP Being Put Out to Pasture

If you have an older computer, it's almost for certain that it's running Windows XP. Am I right? Maybe Vista, if your machine is really ancient, 98 or Me, but most likely, it's XP. And your frugalness is about to come to an end. Microsoft plans to stop releasing updates to the program in a few weeks, which will leave your computer vulnerable to viruses, malware and your basic nuclear annihilation.

People are already starting to stamp their feet about it. How dare they! Don't they know a huge chunk of computer users still have Windows XP? Yeah. But how long were they really supposed to support the thing? It came out in 2001 you guys. Actually, just a couple of weeks before September 11, 2001. The whole Bush administration and five years of the Obama administration have happened in that time. Were we supposed to get hip-deep into the Clinton (or, shudder, Cruze) administration before they pushed it into its grave?

The fact is, Apple stops supporting its products after just a few years. Microsoft's alone in supporting what amounts to ancient software in computer years. But I'm in the same boat. Though our home systems have Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and OSX Mavericks, at work we must have seven or eight XP machines. After the 2008 financial collapse, we didn't upgrade much. To make matters worse, our software upgrades pretty much stopped with our hardware. . .and the old stuff doesn't run well on new machines! So, we're going to (finally) have some decisions to make.

You've been warned!

Microsoft to Take Windows XP Off Life Support Despite Its 29% Market Share

Change: It’s inevitable in and of itself, and it’s inevitable that some people don’t like it. Ars Technica cites a report from Net Market Share contending that Microsoft’s almost-13-year-old operating system, Windows XP, can still be found on almost 30% of computers that connect to the Internet. . .

Jon Stewart Rounds Up ‘Crazy’ CPAC: ‘Take It Out and Jerk It for America!’

Jon Stewart rounded up the best of “crazy” CPAC Monday night, which he described as “Burning Man for people who don’t do drugs and are afraid of fire.” He summed up the big, patriotic speeches with some genital-centered jokes, declaring, “Take it out and jerk it for America!”. . .

A Rocky Mountain Mike CPAC Twofer

CPAC 2014 is over, and managed to mostly garner negative attention, from what I could see. While some liberals lament the lack of a counterweight to the confab, I'm really not sure we should aspire to one. Yes, it's baffling that with this clown car of candidates and "stars," some are predicting Republicans to enlarge their numbers in the House and Senate (with a risk of them actually taking the Senate, which is horrifying). But I don't think that's even a little bit because of CPAC.  I think that's the fault of the political pendulum, a two-party system, and an American public that can't seem to vote for their best interests. Well, that and redistricting, gerrymandering, gutting the Voting Rights Act. . . But enough of that for now. Let's celebrate the end of another CPAC with a twofer comedy pack by Rocky Mountain Mike!

Right Wing World: Sarah Palin Doesn't Disappoint at CPAC

If there is one primary Right Wing World thing I've wondered about (beyond how anyone finds "conservative humor" funny), it's how in the world such odd people become right wing heroes. And Sarah Palin is at the tippy-top of that list. The highest level of political office attained by Palin was governor of a sparsely populated state, for half a term. She proved during her short time as a Vice Presidential candidate that her depth of knowledge is. . .well. . .shallow. She's a pro at the "pageant answer," chock full of "truthiness," without really needing to make any real sense.

She's learned that all she has to do is throw out some far-right red meat phrases, stir in some folksiness, some snark against liberals, and then string it all together in a never-ending, paragraphs-long, run-on sentence.   Also, too. And yet, this lightweight puff of aged "mean girl" fluff was the keynote speaker at CPAC, the big conservative confab. And they totally dug her.

Palin rewrote (and missed the point of) Dr. Suess'
Green Eggs and Ham. Image from source, Esquire.
And I know that by writing about her, I'm just giving her what she wants, but when I read the excerpted article below, I absolutely had to post it. I bolded a couple of the lines that drew me in. But please click through to read the rest. Only Martin Bashir has come close to saying it better.

CPAC Bonus Saturday -- The Princess In Excelsis

By now, and by god, it should have settled permanently in the consciousness of the nation what a huge and untoward gamble with the country John McCain and his campaign took in 2008 when they elevated Sarah Palin from her rightful place on the tundra to the political celebrity she currently enjoys. McCain should pay a heavy price for unleashing this ignorant, two-wheeled bilewagon on the country's politics. If you think she's a legitimate political leader, you're an idiot and a sucker and I feel sorry for you. . .It was as singularly embarrassing a public address as any allegedly sentient primate ever has delivered. . .

Blast from the Past: Snacks of Yesteryear!

Today, I had a lapse in my diet. The Other Half and I were sniping at each other yesterday (home improvements can lead to that!), and I was feeling a little off. So, after I got him a battery for his watch (third store I tried) while he's away, I rationalized that I deserved some Raising Cane's chicken fingers! Don't ask me how that tracks, because I don't really know. Just go with it.

Consequently, I'm off the diet with both feet for the day. And it got me to thinking about snacks. Which does totally make sense. So, here's this week's topic. I'm sure it's a place I've visited before, maybe even recently. And I will return to it again. Probably the next time I'm feeling grouchy!

1. Pringle's New Fangled Potato Chips (1968)
2. Lay's Potato Chips (1960s) - with Buddy Hackett

3. Frito's Corn Chips (1970s) - "Muncha buncha Frito's go with lunch!"
4. Keebler Tato Skins (1980s) - "Baked potato appeal!"

5. Chex Cereal Party Mix (1992) - The Peanuts gang make the mix before it was pre-bagged.
6. Planters Cheez Balls (1980s) - The Cheez Curls were better, IMO.

7. Orville Reddenbacher's Pop Corn & "Buttery-flavored Oil" (1982)
8. Rice Krispies Treats (1980s) - Again, before they were pre-packaged.

9. Idaho Potato Sticks (1979) - It's Leif Garrett, and it's Japanese!
10. Ritz Crackers (1977) - Andy Griffith: "Goooood cracker!"

And that's enough nibbles. Back on the diet with me, and you guys too! Happy Monday, enjoy your extra hour of evening light!

Ed Schultz Changes Mind, Now Opposes Keystone XL Pipeline

I listen to Ed Schultz most days at work, sort of by default. I like to listen to talk radio, but enjoy the left-wing variety. Which, if you didn't know, is a very scarce commodity. And since Tom Hartmann switched to a later hour (where he conflicts with Randi Rhodes), I'm pretty much stuck with Schultz.

I'm not a fan. I find him very knee-jerk, blustery, loud and rough around the edges. Sandwiched between Stephanie Miller and Rhodes, Schultz just comes off as sour. But I usually listen (when Ed deigns to be on for all or part of the show, which is less often than you'd think). And lately, he's been even more irritating, on several issues, but notably, on the Keystone XL pipeline.

Ed was all for it. He proudly announced his diversion from the "party line," and made it a centerpiece in his show. Over a period of a few weeks, Ed's been softening, and now he's apparently changed his mind. Which I think  is worth a bit of an attaboy. Most people in his position would hold fast, or just stop talking about it, moving on to the next controversy.

Keystone Supporter Ed Schultz Now Opposes The Pipeline, Tells President Obama To Go To Nebraska

Ed Schultz, host of MSNBC’s The Ed Show, has changed his mind and become the latest prominent opponent of approving the Keystone XL pipeline. Schultz had angered Keystone opponents by taking the State Department environmental analysis at face value, arguing that the oil is going to come out of Alberta anyways, and the pipeline could be better for the climate. The report left some key context out, and over the course of the last few weeks, Schultz has had a very public — and fascinating — process of coming to grips with the arguments against the pipeline. Climate Progress’ Joe Romm was a guest as this process started. . .

CIA Spying on Congress?

Oy. I have nothing to add.

Rachel Maddow: CIA spying on Congress ‘is death of the Republic stuff’

A dispute between the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Senate Intelligence Committee may have spilled into dangerous territory, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow said on Wednesday, following a New York Times report that agency operatives gained access to the computers being used by lawmakers to investigate the agency. “This is kind of death of the Republic kind of stuff,” Maddow said. “The whole separation of powers thing almost pales in comparison to the seriousness of the allegation that a nation’s own spy services have been turned against its’ own government. Particularly, where that government is supposed to be overseeing the spy services. . .”

So, Why Was Rep. Elijah Cummings Irritated with Rep. Darrell Issa?

The headline might sound like a joke, because really, why wouldn't Rep. Cummings be irritated with Darrell Issa? Issa is deeply irritating.  But if you didn't see it, on Wednesday, Issa shut out Cummings during a committee hearing, going as far as shutting off his mike, and walking out.

But what was it that Cummings was trying to say? Apparently Cummings was trying to point out Issa's statements on FOX "News" (where Issa is a regular and a hero) had no basis in reality.

Oddly, though many have rightly condemned the treatment given Cummings, Right Wing World is in full swoon. Go figure.

The Fox News Segment That Enraged Congressman Cummings

Elijah Cummings (D-MD) exploded at House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) during a hearing about the IRS' inappropriate targeting of organizations seeking tax exempt status, specifically criticizing Issa for releasing relevant evidence to Fox News without also providing it to the committee. . .

Sign From God? Gay Pride Phenomenon? Or Just a Rainbow Splotch?

The splotch is on the left, the sun on the right.

One of the sillier things people believe from the Bible is the whole thing about the rainbow being a sign from God, promising that he won't drown us all on a whim. Burn us? That's on deck, but no drowning. This one even made me roll my eyes at Sunday school. Still, rainbows are still pretty cool, and not just because of The Gay Thing. When you spot one, you get that same feeling you get when you spy your car's odometer rolling over to an even number. You'll share it, if someone's around, and sort of take credit for seeing it first. Right?

A wide shot, with the unfortunate construction site
in the way.
Well, I saw a version of a rainbow that I've never seen before. I was on my walk, and on my way home. The sun was jussst above the mountains, and obscured by a layer of cloud cover. But the sun was blasting through most of the cloud, diffusing into a huge blaze of light. And just to the south, in a jet's contrail, was a splotch of rainbow! No arc. No beginning or end, or pot of gold. It was just a splotch, and it didn't move or change for a block of walking. I took out my phone to take a few pictures, but of course it didn't capture very well. And to make things worse, there's a new development going in a half-block from home, ruining the shot. But I had to share anyway.

Lindsey Graham: Putin in Ukraine, Because Benghazi!

I'm convinced that Senator Lindsey Graham is being held hostage, maybe by the GOP, maybe by and even more despicable group of people! No, listen, hear my logic. Graham keeps throwing out the word "Benghazi" in increasingly baffling contexts, most recently saying it has something to do with what's happening with Russia and the Ukraine. I think it's code. He's sending us signals, so that the good guys know he needs rescuing! Okay, maybe that's far-fetched. But it makes more sense than what he's telling us.

[Excerpt]

Lindsey Graham Takes This ‘Benghazi’ Thing Just A Bit Too Far For Voice Of Reason Michelle Malkin

Looks like the “Barack Obama’s weakness let Ukraine happen” trope has reached its apotheosis with this tweet from Sen. Lindsey Graham, with its inescapable logic: Barack Obama let Benghazi happen, therefore Ukraine. It’s just like that time when Reagan knew that somebody had to pay for the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut, so he invaded Grenada to show Hezbollah who’s boss. If Obama had just kicked somebody’s ass — anybody’s — we would surely not have seen Russia trying to reclaim parts of the old Soviet territories. Remember how George W. Bush’s swift vengeance for 9/11 completely dissuaded Vladimir Putin from invading Georgia in 2008? . . .

So, Here's Why I Haven't Been Blogging Much

The odyssey of our home transformation (of sorts) started late last year. After our house finally started edging into the black after having been upside-down financially for several years, we started both a) feeling a little pride of ownership again, and b) feeling a bit sour about things that had been  the same since forever.

Though we've been planning on several tracks, our first step came out of a bit of sideways thinking while looking for something else. On a whim, I drove up to the RC Willey outlet store, on a quest for nothing in particular, but with an appropriate vehicle for bringing something back. I ended up buying a glider/recliner that would replace a very old green armchair. More than merely replacing old furniture, this chair allows both myself and The Other Half to read comfortably together in the same room. Perfect for a long, luxurious weekend day when we have nothing on the agenda.

Around the same time, we knew we'd have to replace our old bar stools around the kitchen island (our only permanent eating space). The old ones were very high quality, very sturdy chairs with arms, but they were hopelessly stuck in the early 90s. No amount of resurfacing and reupholstering would bring them into the 2010s, so they were kicked to the curb. We actually found the ones we liked at Sam's Club, and as luck would have it, three were obtained as returns! Woohoo, a few saved bucks!

That done, we decided that our old rattan chair needed a makeover or a replacement. We found a seamstress on Craigslist, and went the recovering route, and ended up with a nice change, a hipper fabric that went better in the room. So far, so good! Excess fabric has been sent to a relative for some throw pillows in the near future, along with some valances. That will be the finishing touch, sometime soon. Meanwhile, the really big change, was the granite.

A little bit of luck struck us with a bit of trade (along with a little of our own funding) from a friend, allowing us to install some amazing granite in our kitchen, and in our bathrooms. We went with a Crema Bordeuax in the two biggest rooms, and a scrapyard remnant in our guest bath. Surprisingly, the scrap is nearly as lovely as the higher-end stuff! It really looks great. Of course, you can't just put the old sinks and faucets back, so we needed some basins and hardware.

We settled on three sets of identical bathroom faucets in brushed nickel, and a big, sturdy nickel one in the kitchen. We opted for rectangular basins in the extremely long vanity in the master, and a nice oval in the guest bath. The kitchen got one of our more extravagant purchases, a seamless 60/40 undermount stainless deep kitchen sink. And don't forget the new garbage disposer!

All of this was finished by the middle of last week. Juggling work and remodel, I arranged to have some friends around to fill in the gaps, and make sure everything got installed just right. And by all rights, by Tuesday night, I should have been finished. Well, except for restocking the shelves and drawers in the kitchen and bathroom, since we'd cleared everything out before the contractors got here.

But we weren't done. We had those ugly "Hollywood dressing room"-style bathroom lights, builder-quality from 1996. And we had mostly the original, standard bathroom hardware (towel racks, toilet paper holder, etc.) from the same year.  Think: every apartment you've ever lived in, much like our original sinks and countertops. So, over the weekend we purchased and installed (2) towel rods, (2) hand towel loops, (1) toilet paper holder, (1) halogen decorative light fixture, (1) dimmer switch and (2) standard light fixtures!

So, obviously, we're spending money as though we have it (which may pinch for a few months, let's be honest), and though we're basically finished, there are still a few tasks, some optional, some crucial. The biggest one is that The Other Half has been splashing paint around, getting a feel for new colors. So, we're basically committed to repainting some rooms. The dimmer switch I bought is not
the push-on type, so I'll be switching that out. There may be some adjustments to rugs and towels, and maybe a few other accessories. And by year's end, probably some kitchen lighting changes. Other than that, we're just about done!

So, hopefully after all of that, you can see why I haven't had a lot of time for blogging!  But I should be back to full strength--such as it is--by Monday evening. I will try!

Blogger Taking a Short Break. . .Back Later!

It's been a long week you guys. Kitchen and bathroom remodel in the middle of a work week. Living in a house with things that aren't where they should be. The Other Half has been gone, and I've just been either busy or tired.

I'll be back in here some time today, but for now? Bedtime.

UPDATE: Still tired, and obligated to more events than usual. But back by Sunday evening for sure!
