Blast from the Past: RIP Whitney Houston

It now goes without saying that my Sunday Blast from the Past post is dedicated to Whitney Houston. I was never her biggest fan, but I'd be lying if I didn't admit that many of her songs have been part of the soundtrack of my life. I remember Saving All My Love for You being used on an episode of Ricky Schroder's Silver Spoons, and being censored. They changed "making love the whole night through," to "holding each other the whole night through." Dumb, but it was a kid's show. Anyway, Whitney played in the background for my whole 20s, and though I never owned one of her albums, I know the words to countless songs. My favorite wasn't even a hit: her duet with Aretha Franklin, It Isn't, It Wasn't, It Ain't Never Gonna Be.

There are more, but those are the ones that played behind my early adult years. Your life's soundtrack might be a bit different. You have to admit, she was quite a talent, back in the day. RIP, Whitney.

And here's my favorite. It doesn't have a video, but doesn't it sound like she's having fun?

  1. Who would have thought that Aretha Franklin would outlive her goddaughter, Whitney Houston? A year ago, the Queen of Soul was supposedly on her deathbed, and now she's recording again. While I did not expect Whitney Houston's death, it did not particularly surprise me, given her history of drug abuse. She had an amazing voice.

  2. I was thinking pretty much the same thing when I wrote this. We almost lost another troubled Aretha duet partner, George Michael, just a few weeks ago. Thank goodness he got better, and his drug of choice is just pot!

  3. My fav from my clubbing days was "I Learned from the Best (Thunderpuss Remix)" Loved, loved, loved that song. So sad about her passing.
