San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom on Proposition 8

Gavin Newsom may bear part of the blame for the success of Proposition 8 in California, the measure that stripped existing marriage rights from the state constitution. Newsom gave a speech saying that gay people were going to be legally married whether people "liked it or not." This part of his speech was used by the "Yes on 8" people in advertisements, and that line seems to have energized some people to vote for the measure.

But it is clear that Newsom did not intend for this to happen, as is evidenced by the clip below. Clearly, he wants to do everything he can to help fight the implementation of the proposition. Interestingly, Newsom says that the people responsible for the proposition are now going to sue to have existing marriages--like mine--invalidated now. Nice. I predict that they'll go after domestic partnerships next. After that, who knows? Maybe declare gays 3/5 human? It seems like the next logical step.
