It is hard to imagine that it was over 40 years ago when 2001: A Space Odyssey was written/filmed. It was long before Star Wars & just down the street from Star Trek... but on a much more believable level. This writ changed our view of science, technology, space exploration & psychotic computers forever. (I still hear HAL's voice from time to time...)Clarke (with help from his way cool friend & astronomer Carl Sagan) gave Kubrick the proper tools & knowledge to portray this movie in a very realistic way. Humanizing & demonizing technology, capturing the desperation & emptiness of space & in a more indirect way they gave us a chance to realize we are our own worst enemies... trapped on a little bitty speck of blue dust floating thru the vast universe... infested with stupid monkeys.
