Chris Matthews vs. "Crazy Eyes" Michele Bachmann

On Tuesday, I watched MSNBC's coverage of the elections for the most part, along with a group of friends. We ducked out for a little of Kathy Griffin: Whores on Crutches, a little of FOX "News" and their electiongasms, and some local news. But MSNBC's coverage was enlightening and entertaining.  I know some people think that the opinion hosts shouldn't be news hosts, but I didn't find that to really be a problem. Rachel Maddow, Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews and the rest got the rare opportunity to talk to some of the luminaries--such as they are--of the GOP. They talked to Eric Cantor and asked him some tough questions.

Cantor mostly answered in generalities, and was very low on specifics. . .which has been typical from the right on economic issues.  "Tax cuts" and "cutting spending" are nice easy phrases, but what programs would they specifically cut? Nothing specific seems to be the actual answer.  But the real prize of the night was Michele Bachmann of Minnesota.  She earned her moniker of "crazy eyes" in spades, looking alarmingly awake, and answered all questions with a canned set of talking points, even if they didn't fit the question.  Matthews called her on it, leading to the exchange below.  Oddly, the right-wing blogosphere sees this as a "win" for Bachmann, since she got a dig in at Matthews for his "thrill up my leg" statement from the Presidential campaign.  It's very strange what things "stick" in right-wing world. Kind of like a tired Barack Obama stammering that he'd been to fifty. . .seven states.  Nobody with a functional cerebral cortex thinks that Obama really believes there are 57, but they won't. Let. It. Go.

So, forget that Bachmann looks borderline psychotic here, and that she can't answer questions posed to her. She got in a dig! Woo-hoo!

It should be noted that though MSNBC was expected to be a mournful wake on election night, it really wasn't the case.  There was mirth, there was snark. But the hosts all seemed very engaged, and seemed to not only be having a good time, but also had a lot of insight.  Was it biased? Probably. But they've never claimed otherwise. Unlike a certain "Fair & Balanced" channel.

  1. So that's the celebrated Michele Bachman. From her actions and slutty appearance, I assumed it was one of the cast member from "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" TV show.

  2. I think Matthews got it wrong. Bachmann hasn't been hypnotized. She's actually a Votebot 2000 (product of a joint venture between Disney and Sony) who has been programmed to vote in predictable ways and spout one of a handful of canned responses to any question.

  3. GNOP: HAH!

    Jill: HAH!

(Both in my best Chris Matthews voice)

  4. How many states now have GOP Govenors, state houses, congressman, and Senators? Chris is a commie co-conspirator, and she called him on it.

Michelle Bachman is a leading figure among Americans, and she is kicking the communists ass.

You can try to understand why. Or you can poke fun at things you don't understand.

  5. Sofa, honestly. You think Matthews is a commie co-conspirator, and that has something to do with Bachmann getting a dig in about a thrill up his leg? You make less sense every day.

But that's understandable if you're a new Glenn Beck fan, AND a Michele Bachmann fan! Good grief. "Understanding" her would require entering the right-wing bubble and surrendering to the crazy eyes. No thanks.

  6. As I learned recently on a comment thread on my own blog, sofa believes that Scandinavia is a communist, totalitarian dystopia. In that universe, one can't help but be a fan of Glenn Beck and Michele Bachmann.

  7. I've always had a policy of replying to almost every comment I get (I don't get all that many, after all). I get friendly people who may disagree or agree (like Jill). I get potentially hostile people who I disagree with, but can be agreeable about it (like Dan). Then there are people like Sofa.

Wait, ARE there any other people like Sofa?

Anyway, Jill, I like the thought of a Scandinavian dystopian future movie, maybe a Mad Max with yodelling or Logan's Run with an ABBA soundtrack!

  8. Jill, James,

    Facts are stubborn things.
Chris did get all tingly when his messiah spoke.
And Scandinavians are rejecting their hard core socialism.
It seems to bother you, that you that you cannot dispute the facts.

And yes, America is full of people like me-- We're called Americans. We have opinions, and warts, and we smell. We embrace the liberty of individuals. And we reject collectivism.

    .

  9. Sofa, just to be factual "tingle" and all other varients of the word were NOT what he said. Not that it really matters, but the word was "thrill." If you're going to make fun of Chris Matthews, at least get the comment right.

The rest of your post? Nonsense to me. Don't give a hoot about Scandahoovians, theirs or your views on socialism, or whatever facts you think that I'm bothered by for their irrefutibility. Collectivism? More "meh" from me. No idea what the frig you're talking about.

This post was about Crazy Eyes Bachmann, and as usual, your comments wandered away from that long ago.

  10. Apologies then, for responding to what you and Jill wrote.
I thought your words conveyed meaning and were worthy of a response.

    I was mistaken.

  11. Sofa: "I was mistaken."

If you'd just start with that assumption, we'd save an awful lot of time. Heh.
