Several months ago, I took a political compass test. It gauges where you fall in the right vs. left, and also the libertarian vs. authoritarian political ideologies. I decided to take the test again, just to see if I've shifted in any direction. As it turns out, I've pretty much stayed put. Here is the original graph from my first test:
And here is where I fell today:
Amazingly enough, I ended up at almost precisely the same position, though the graphics has changed, making the comparison more difficult. But I'm happy to say that I'm not extreme in any dimension, finding myself ensconsed in the left/libertarian quadrant, though more left than libertarian. Where do you fall? Find out at: Political Compass
A 3D model captures even more detail. Matt Bracken has proposed the "CW2 cube"

Food for thought.

fyi- Tried the 'Political Compass Quiz', but I could only answer a few, since I reject the premise on which most of the questions rested. Poorly executed.
ReplyDeleteI find most quizzes to have the very same problem. Still, I'd be curious to see where you fell.
ReplyDeleteMy score is:
ReplyDeleteEconomic Left/Right -5.88
Libertarian/Authoritarian -3.69
While any multiple choice poll, quiz or test will invariably have some questions that are going to be difficult to answer. Simply because none of the choices offered will reflect your exact feelings on a subject. But, hard though it may be, they can be answered.
After all, it's just an informal quiz for Pete's sake, not a application for a Top Secret Security Clearance. So relax, take a deep breath and do the quiz, no one's going to investigate your answers.
I'd be a -11.0 on the Libertarian axis, off the chart (if the quiz made any sense, which it does not).
ReplyDelete(and the quiz pre-supposes collectivist economics assumptions which muddle 'left' for collectivism and 'right' for obama facism? poorly executed quiz.)
economically, I'm with Heyek, vonMises, and Rothbard.
philosophically, I'm with Jefferson, Adams, Madison, Locke, and Basiat.
But everywhere on that grid is 'Americans'. Where do people who grew up hating America fit in (people like Michelle and Barry and Soros and Ayers)?

the CW2 cube is another such attempt to locate people on a spectrum, based on different criteria...
http://westernrifleshooters.blogspot.com/2010/07/bracken-cw2-cube-mapping-meta-terrain.html
Such criteria proved useful in Bosnia, if 'color' is replaced with 'religion'.
Same in Warsaw in WW2.
Same in Chechnia in 1992.
Same in Iran today.
Same with islam (a violent political meme).
Now replace 'color' with 'communism' and the CW2 cube works for Spain in the 1930's, and Romania from 1945-1992. Communism vs liberty works for
The Ukraine, Stalin, Stalin everywhere
China, Mao
Cambodia, Pol Pot
Cuba, Castro
Venezuela, Chavez
Mengistu
... every collectivist, ever
.
The cube is useful for 'big picture' distinctions that historically lead to regional violence- IF that one axis is adjusted for local conditions.

Sofa, I don't know where you get off claiming that I (or the Obamas or anyone else) hate America. I don't. I do hate having anyone tell me what I must believe in order to be a "good American."
ReplyDeleteFor folks like Sofa, the yardstick for determining if someone hates Americia or not is pretty simple. Anyone holding views that differ from theirs hates America.
ReplyDeleteIt's such an extreme view (which I guess should go without saying). I think the strongest notion in the same vein that I've ever expressed is that Republicans' policies are BAD for America, or HURT America. I don't think I've ever said that even people like Karl Rove or Dick Cheney HATE America. It's a pretty rude assertion.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, it's both a rude and arrogant thing to say. For whatever reason, some people see everything as being either black or white, with never any room for shades of gray. To them nuance is just another an four-letter word.
ReplyDeleteI did NOT "tell me what I must believe in order to be a "good American."
ReplyDeleteI asked where the other people fit in: The people who have openly and publicly and repeatedly declared a hatred for America and for American values, as Michelle and Barry and Soros and Ayers all have done.
If you're unaware of their declarations, then you haven't been paying attention.
