Republicans Vote Against Middle-Class Tax Cuts, As Expected

I figured I should post the result of the vote, since I've been talking about this issue for a few days. The Senate took a cloture vote on extending the middle-class (below $250,000 per year) Bush era tax cuts. The vote was 53-36, making the Senate rules look even more ridiculous, as that is over two-thirds, which is the intention of the 60-vote threshold.

While I know that right-wing talk radio, FOX "News", Congressional Republicans and the right-wing blogosphere will try to spin this to the GOP advantage, it can't be done without stretching the truth. If the middle-class tax cuts expire--as was always intended, by the way--it will be because Republicans would not vote to extend them. And to term this as "Obama tax hikes" is just a flat-out lie.  Arrrgh. The stupid, it burns.

Senate Republicans vote to raise taxes on middle class

. . .Nothing really reflects the absurdity of this debate better than this exchange from the morning's debate between Senators Schumer and Grassley. The Dems argue on facts, the Republicans argue nonsense, and will win the day. On behalf of billionaires. Against the rest of the country. . .

  1. Lame Duck Dems try to raise taxes.
GOP and a few Dems vote for the good of the country, and stop Pelosi&Reid on taxes.

To what lows will Pelosi& Reid now stoop?
A nation gathers pitchforks and torches while watching the Pelosi&Reid death spasms.

  2. What the HELL are you talking about? This was a vote to EXTEND the tax cuts, and the Republicans voted AGAINST it! Your spin is 100% bass ackwards. How on earth can this be seen as stooping to new lows? What color is the sky in your world?

  3. I think both sides are acting stupid.
The Dem's are playing the class warfare game.
The GOP could have made these tax cuts permnment when they controlled everything.
Both sides are playing chicken and in the end, everyone will get a massive tax increase in January.

  4. Actually, Dan, I don't think most of us have much to worry about. I don't have the figures at hand, but on a weekly/monthly basis, ordinary people's cut of the tax break really didn't amount to all that much. Economists who are NOT politicians are almost unianimously in favor of letting the tax cuts expire, as they were intended to do.

I can't remember a tax rate increase or decrease that I really ever noticed.

  5. Mimicking Pelosi talking points does not provide meteorological 'sky assessment' skills.

Don't be angry, when reality conflicts with your mythology.
