I do it because despite all odds and reason, Palin is still considered a strong contender for the Republican candidate for President in 2012. Having just gotten through one of the craziest election cycles we've ever had--where fortunately, most of the extreme candidates lost--I have tremendously mixed feelings about that. Palin is extreme, nutty and gaffe-prone as Christine O'Donnell, Sharron Angle, Joe Miller and the rest. And like Harry Reid when he ran against Sharron Angle, there's probably no candidate that President Obama would rather run against. But I also know that though Reid defeated Angle by a good margin, that I was still living in dread that the crazy lady would win. I still think Palin would lose (probably lose big) to Obama, barring a hugely negative occurrence in the next year and a half. But I don't want to be on those pins and needles in 2012.
So, the problem remains, does focusing on Palin give her more power? It's already been proven that she can't do or say anything that turns off her base, no matter how jaw-droppingly wacky. But what about those outside her base? I maintain that it is important to point out her foibles and her hypocrisy for the people who might not otherwise know about them. So, I'll continue to use my little (teeny, tiny) corner of the internets to shine a light on Palin when she flubs.
And flub, she did. In the story below, Palin is doing damage control on a story about her daughters. The kids (off limits, don'cha know, unless Palin finds them useful) got involved in a nasty FaceBook fight about Sarah Palin's Alaska. In it, Willow used the word "faggot," rather quickly and off-handedly when trying to slam an opponent who didn't like Mom's show. Bristol joined in, and neither were saying things a mom would be very proud of.
So, does Palin make apologies for the comment? Nope, I don't believe she's even acknowledged the inappropriateness of the word. She did spin like a top to make it someone else's fault, and even threw in at least one outright lie to make it better. Strange for a person who regularly criticizes the "lamestream media" for "making stuff up."
[Excerpt]
Palin On Willow’s Antigay Rant
. . .“While Palin correctly points out that the national media should not have exploited the musings of a 16-year-old, the balance of her response reveals important things about Sarah Palin, not as a parent, but as a media critic and human being,” reports Mediaite. “Not only does she undermine her claims of media ‘lies’ by making stuff up herself, she also displays a disturbing attitude about the use of the word ‘fa**ot. . .’”
