The Smithsonian is Falling Apart

Far be it for me to lay this at the feet of George W. Bush, but what the hell? The Smithsonian is too important to let this sort of thing happen. Get it together, guys!

Smithsonian Slow to Raise $2.5 Billion for Repairs, Report Says

The Smithsonian Institution, under fire for the spending of top administrators, has racked up $2.5 billion in maintenance problems that threaten its collections including Asian and African art, a government report found. The institution expects Congress to bail it out.

In the past two years, humidification problems have caused ``unpredictable leaks'' in the building on the National Mall that houses the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery and the National Museum of African Art, the Government Accountability Office said in the report Friday. Faulty temperature and humidity controls are harming historic airplanes at the National Air and Space Museum's storage facilities.
