Brrrr! Winter Weather, but Not in Las Vegas!

I sit in my office this morning, trying to get the blinds closed enough that the bright sun doesn't distract from my monitor. It's brisk here this morning, but to people in much of the rest of the country, it's downright balmy. They've been warning since Thursday that we were due for rain, storms, wind, "winter storm warnings" for the ring of mountains that surround the Las Vegas valley. So far though, it's a beautiful day!

Not so in the upper parts of Nevada. I've always heard that Reno, Tahoe and Carson City (and Truckee, across the state line) were brutal in the winter. . .and I've always wondered why people live there! The Other Half and I keep toying with the idea of moving back to the Midwest at some not-so-distant date, to be near the family. Then I see stories like this one, and think, are we insane? We get two or three below freezing nights per year here on average! I wear a fleece jacket, unzipped most of the winter! Brrrrrr. . .no, I certainly like the desert in the winter time.

And don't forget, winter is only two weeks old. . .

Winter Storm Pummels Western States

Still more snow piled up Sunday in the western U.S. mountains, where at least 5 feet had fallen from a storm that contributed to flooding, killed at least three people and blacked out thousands of customers on the West Coast.

At least 5 feet of snow had fallen on ski areas in the rugged Sierra Nevada mountains by early Sunday, with 9 feet possible at some higher elevations, the National Weather Service said. As much as 3 feet more could hit the area by Tuesday evening, the weather service said. . .
