Keith Olbermann's Objection to Jon Stewart's "False Equivalence"

I'm not surprised that the host of Countdown with Keith Olbermann was a little touchy about Jon Stewart's speech at his rally.  It was a great speech, as Olbermann himself acknowledged.  But it did raise a false equivalence between the supposed biases of all of cable news. It's something that bugs me too.  In our political discourse, it is always posited that there are two sides to every story. Two equal sides to every story. But I don't find that to be true.  Is MSNBC liberal-leaning? Yep, admittedly so. Is FOX "News" conservative-leaning? Decidedly so (though they inexplicably don't admit it).  Are they flip sides of the coin? I don't believe so.

I've explored this theme many, many times on this blog.  FOX is a channel that pretends to be neutral news, but is very obviously not.  MSNBC doesn't call itself news, doesn't slogan itself "fair and balanced", but is much closer to FOX's claim than FOX is. By a long shot.  But like I said, I've covered this ground before. Here's Keith Olbermann's and Jonathan Alter's take on Stewart's admonishment to "cable TV" in general.

  1. Fox is socialist/statist and pro-Saudi (based on ownership).

They are hardly an 'opposing viewpoint' to the mainly communist media.

'Two wings of the same party' is what we have now. But that is changing.

    America yearns to be free.

  2. It is dishonest to have a socialist and communist debate, as if they represent opposite viewpoints. The dis-information lame-stream-media has been keeping opposition viewpoints off the air and screaming CRAZY whenever normal people dare speak.

Thankfully Americans have had enough of the socialist/communist intolerance and hatred of America.

Nov 2 is the first small step. Sweeping change is coming, penicillin to kill the viral infection.

  3. What sweeping change? The change BACK to the way it was before everyone wanted change? Is that really change? I think you just like using big words like communist/socialist. Maybe you should find out what those words mean before you repeat Limbaugh's radio show.

  4. Sofa's off his meds again. The Republican "wave" is a knee-jerk reaction to the party in power. If they win, they win by default. Anyone who thinks that things are gonna magically get better with the same ideas and policies that led to our problems is nuts. Yes sofa, I said "nuts." If you can refer to socialists, communists and viral infections, I can say "nuts."
