Hillary Clinton's Voters Would Vote for McCain?

This is bad news, but potentially not as bad as it seems at first blush. Follow me for a second, here. We know that Democrats are turning out in droves for the primaries, thrilled, excited, determined to end the reign of the neo-cons. Republicans are much less energized, and many will only vote for McCain with their fingers firmly gripping their noses.

So let's say that Barack Obama wins the nomination, against John McCain in the general election. If this poll is right, 25% of the Clinton voters will vote for McCain. But will they? Will they still have that drive, that passion for voting for McCain? You've got 100% of Obama supporters for the Democrats, 75% of Clinton voters, and who knows how many Independents and Republicans.

John McCain, on the other hand, gets a very disenchanted Republican base, 25% of Hillary Clinton's voters, and some Independents. Are any of these groups likely to feel so passionate about voting for John McCain that they'll show up in droves? Throw in the fact that without Clinton in the race, you don't inspire a wave of "Anybody but her!" voters. I'm not worried. Yet.

But, a whopping 25% of Democrats who support Hillary would defect and vote for McCain should Obama become the candidate. . .
