The only reason I can figure for Republicans' antipathy toward Al Franken, is that Bill O'Reilly hates him. I mean sure, he was a liberal talk-radio host. He shows very little respect for people like O'Reilly, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh. He's written a handful of from-the-left political books. And unlike Ann Coulter, Hannity or Limbaugh, said books are intelligent, funny and well-researched.
But the level of hatred is sort of out of scale, isn't it? While Franken is poised to become the junior US Senator from Minnesota, up until now he has only had a niche market of liberal readers and listeners. He's never had a triple-digit million-dollar contract like the conservatives mentioned above. He's never had any actual power, except with his comparatively smaller fan base. Even his Saturday Night Live career, and other acting/writing/producing endeavors have been largely behind the scenes, or short-lived.
Do they hate his fey "Stuart Smalley" character? Were they put off by the "Al Franken Decade?" Did LateLine rub them the wrong way? Maybe they don't like his friendship with G. Gordon Liddy? I don't know what it is, I really don't. But I personally am going to love having Franken in the Senate. I may even start watching C-SPAN2!
