I've tried to step back as more and more happened in the Trayvon Martin case. And rather than trying the case on my blog, I tried to confine myself to commenting on the insanity of the "stand your ground" laws (brought to you by ALEC, naturally), the potential ineptitude of the Sanford Police Department, and the likelihood that were the roles reversed, that Martin wouldn't be allowed to just walk away, with his gun.
But it has been difficult not saying much. Seemingly every day, something strange occurred in the case, from off-the-wall testimonials by people who seemingly hadn't seen George Zimmerman in years, to his lawyers publicly trouncing him and abandoning him on television. Zimmerman's side of the story has been gobbled down, hook, line and sinker by right-wing world. And when Zimmerman is actually conferring with Sean Hannity, it just gets to be too much! So thankfully, an arrest was finally made. As unseemly as some of the media circus has been, the fact remains that were it not for the public outcry, Zimmerman would just be on his merry way.

This story is farf from over and it will be a circus, which is too sad.
ReplyDeleteOne thing though, if the roles were reversed, Martin would be arrested because he is a minor and cannot legally have a gun on him.
Would he have been arrested for murder? I honestly do not know. Maybe because he is younger and probably in better shape than Zimmerman and would be able to run away if he wanted.
But this is going to be a circus ala OJ Simpson murder trial and what happens if Zimmerman is aquitted? Will they riot like when the people in LA did when the cops got aquitted in the Rodney King case?
They will have to get an out of county jury in the case and porobably hold the trial outside of Sanford. And what happens if the jury is threatened, which is a possibility.
And the defense team probab ly will do it for free so they can get some free publicity and they will also help turn this into a circus.
I don't know about riots. If they can't convict and it is seen as primarily because of shoddy police work, it ain't gonna be pretty. If they put up evidence that corroborates Zimmerman's story in a convincing way, and it looks like he told the truth? Maybe it wouldn't be quite so ugly. If Zim can't prove any injury or medical attention, and if the voice crying for help turns out to really be Martin, and Zim STILL gets acquitted? Well then I'm not going to Florida for a while. Hopefully, people control themselves.
