Republicans Go Easy on Huckabee at Debate


Darn it. Usually, in the political sphere, you can count on Republicans to get nasty and mean, particularly in a public forum like a debate. But they didn't land any solid punches against "surging" Mike Huckabee today, in the last Republican debate of the year.

Huckabee is a stealth candidate, who sounds reasonable, but is a serious whack-a-doodle. I fear that he--more than any of the other elephants in this race--has the ability to snow the most people. Like Ross Perot, there's a crazy little guy with a sanity mask on, just itching to rip it off.

In last debate, rivals, format let Huckabee off the hook

Despite the hype and anticipation, the last Republican debate before the Iowa caucuses and the first since former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee surged to the lead was a rather ho-hum affair.

The Des Moines Register’s format, combined with a distracting appearance by Alan Keyes and the field’s apparent decision to play nice, amounted to a pass for Huckabee, who was expected to endure his toughest outing yet. . .
