Since this story broke in late February, it has barely burbled into the mainstream press. Apparently, this guy made a bunch of ricin--a deadly poison--brought it to Las Vegas, and then got deathly ill from exposure. Two weeks later, the ricin was discovered, and the pieces put together.
Now, all of that is possibly slightly or completely wrong. The reason is, most of the news reports of the matter have been contradictory or very, very vague. And it continues to be. The larger point, for me, is that an apparent domestic terrorist was able to bring a deadly toxin to a major US tourist destination, and come very close to doing something with it. All in this age of warrantless wiretapping, data mining and the like. And nobody knew what he was up to until two weeks later. Feel safer yet?
