California Electoral Dirty Tricks: Petitions

A while back I posted some pieces about the effort in California to change the state's electoral laws. Currently, it is a winner-takes-all setup. A far-right organization connected to the infamous (and ironically named) "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" is trying to change that, so that electoral votes are divvied up. This would help--if not insure--that the Republican nominee wins the Presidency in 2008.

This is a dicey issue. It is engineered by Republicans to help Republicans, but if it is all legal and above board, it's hard to completely disagree with their efforts. But it (of course) isn't all above board, and may also be treading into illegal territory as well.

Dirty tricksters caught on video at UC Santa Barbara

When Steven Attewell, an eagle-eyed member of the blog Daily Kos, alerted Courage Campaign staffer Erik Love that California Counts petition-gatherers at UC Santa Barbara were gathering signatures to help "children with cancer," he headed out to investigate. And, sure enough, Erik noticed that "children with cancer" was just a sneaky tactic to get people to sign the so-called "Electoral College Reform Initiative" -- what we call the dirty trick initiative.
