More Conservatives Coming Out Against Minimum Wage

If the election in November goes according to conventional wisdom, the GOP is poised to make tremendous gains, or even take over one or both houses of Congress.  I get that a President's party usually loses big in mid-term elections.  I get that when the economy is bad, the party in power is often in trouble.  The pendulum swings left, and then always swings right again.  But is America ready to have that sucker lassoed, hogtied, and lashed to a hitching post in the furthest reaches of Teabaggistan?

I hope not.  Because if it is, my faith in my fellow man--and their reasoning skills--is going to be lower than it already is.  Think about how this election season has gone so far. Who has been demonized--besides President Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid--by the GOP so far?  Gays, naturally. People who don't have health insurance. Immigrants. Black people. Muslims. Gays again. The unemployed. I'm sure I've left some out. And then there's the fact that many prominent candidates are advocating eliminating or privatizing Social Security, Medicare and the VA.  So, there's your old and sick and veterans.  As icing on the cake, now they're targeting the poor.  Who is left to vote for them?

  1. I am agaisnt the minimum wage. Who does it help? A few people. Who does it hurt? A lot of people, especially the young and hard to employ.
Should someone be paid $3 an hour? No, of course not. But the market should decide what the rate should be, ot government. But minimum wage is not supposed to be a living wage. It is for people who are trying to establish themselves in the workforce. Minimum wage has hurt far more people than it has helped.

  2. When markets decide things, they shoot for profit, not the betterment of workers. Unregulated business is amoral, with no care for the human equation. I say amoral and not immoral, because it doesn't do this for evil, it does it for profit. It's all business cares about. There is no reason in the world to believe that business would pay a reasonable wage to everybody, if left to their own devices.

As for minimum wage, could YOU live on it?
