For a little over two weeks, Democrats have been in full-on panic mode, over shifting polls, and an apparent John McCain ascendancy. What a difference a day makes. Yesterday's economic bad news had very little silver lining except to highlight an extreme deficiency in McCain's (and Sarah Palin's) armor. McCain has no economic expertise whatsoever, and in fact has often times made things worse. And--in an unusual twist--the news is actually getting out.
Add to that a decline in Palin's stratospheric early popularity, and a growing awareness of both McCain's and Palin's willingness to lie, and you have a perfect storm for Barack Obama to once again take the lead. It is still not a certainty of course, but the signs are good. And here's one more sign, a former strong McCain supporter, Richard Cohen, has written a scathing editorial on the "Maverick." Following his loss to George W. Bush in the 2000 South Carolina primary, John McCain did something extraordinary: He confessed to lying about how he felt about the Confederate battle flag, which he actually abhorred. "I broke my promise to always tell the truth," McCain said. Now he has broken that promise so completely that the John McCain of old is unrecognizable.
