In our society, few people get to be venerated as gods. But there are a few who come close, at least in the adulation they get from the mainstream media, or at least in the prominent political parties. Ronald Reagan went from popular President to less so, to deity over the course of a few years. And General David Patraeus has probably been held higher aloft than any figure in present day politics than anyone since St. Ron.
When MoveOn.org dared to question the General several months ago, they were lambasted by the Republican Party, and by dutiful journalists as traiters or worse. Since then, John McCain has sited Patraeus as though his word were written on golden plates. McCain even gave Patraeus credit for things he had no control over. Now, in just over a week, Patraeus is giving up control over that which he did have responisibility for.
Will we now be beholden to Lieutenant-General Raymond Odierno?
